What You Need to Know About Genital Herpes

Fanfair: Hello, I am Dr. Robyn Neblett Fanfair,
Medical Officer in the Division of STD Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Did you know that roughly 1 out
of 6 people between the ages of 14 to 49 years
has genital herpes? Knowing the facts about herpes
can you help make informed decisions about your health. Genital herpes is a sexually
transmitted disease or STD. People get genital herpes
by having vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact with
someone who has the disease. You cannot get genital
herpes from sharing a drink or from a toilet seat. The symptoms of this STD
can be very mild to painful. In some cases, a person can be
infected with genital herpes and not even have
symptoms because of this, most people are not
aware of their infection. In other cases, a person may
have 1 or more blisters on or around the genitals,
rectum or mouth. The blisters break
and leave sores that can take weeks to heal. There is no treatment
that can cure herpes. However, antiviral
medications can prevent or shorten outbreaks. People with herpes should not
have sex during an outbreak. Condoms can provide
some protection against genital herpes. However, herpes outbreaks
can occur in areas not covered
by a condom. You can find more information
about herpes and other STDs by visiting

When genital herpes symptoms occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth.

Yes, oral herpes can be spread through kissing. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) causes infections of the mouth and lips, often called fever blisters or cold sores. A person with a cold sore from HSV-1 can pass the virus to someone else by kissing. Herpes can be released from sores that the virus causes. But, it is also released between outbreaks from skin that doesn’t appear to have a sore.

my girlfriend just told me that she has genital herpes, I really love her and want to spend all my life with her. I know sex is not important in a relationship, but there's gonna be a moment when I won't stand it. is there a way of having sex with a female with herpes in a real safe way?

Yes, it has been shown that the use of once-daily valacyclovir by persons with genital HSV-2 infections can reduce their risk of spreading the infection to their uninfected partners by roughly 50%–regardless of whether or not they have symptoms.

NEW FLASH CDC IS NOT COMPLETELY INFORMED !!!!  YOU can be infected by someone who is a drug addicted they transfer, baggies in their month and repeat contact with that person who carries the HV2 you can get the virus!!!!!! I know this first hand my husband, got it did not know he was a carrier of the Virus. I got it no one knew what I had and for two years, my out break was so bad I now suffer from very bad side effects and am on anti-viral meds everyday, CDC if you need to know more contact me.     Time to up date

  • Reply AJ Master June 27, 2014 at 5:50 pm

You can also get them in your throat, ear, up your nose, and they may not always present as a blister , they may be a sore that bleeds, and burns, they can show up on any part of your body, I have been tested by the STD Clinic in Seattle, and I have a very bad case, cause Doctors are not up to date on the Virus, changing appearance.

I am willing to get a herpes blood test but I don’t think my husband will agree to it

  • Reply Jonathon G. April 6, 2019 at 6:58 am

Wait a second.. you said herpes can spread with or without a condom but you said it can only be spread during sexual intercourse, that would mean by mere contact with a person who has herpes would make you infected, nice wordplay.

Who doesn't really know this? To think that is is what the government wastes our money on! There is most likely already a cure in the form of gene therapy and blocking the viruses microRNA but there's no money in the cure
