What is Happening To The Women Of Ciudad Juarez?

August 18, 2019

(light soft music) (speaking in a foreign language) (dramatic music) (speaking in a foreign language) – In 2001, the term femicide
emerged as a way to describe violence against women
because they are women. When thinking about femicide, the first thing that we want to remember is that femicide is a global phenomenon. Femicide is not unique towards Mexico, however right now since 2004,
the femicides have increased. (light soft music) (speaking in a foreign language) One thing I try to do in my work is to talk about critically
what are the conditions that give rise to femicide? (upbeat music) Businesses don’t want
to come and set up shop if there is negative attention. So the government talks about femicide, the killing of young
women and girls in Mexico, as a dark legend. The activists and the mothers will not let this escape public attention. One of the ways that mothers
and activists do this is by painting crosses. (light soft music) (speaking in a foreign language) So when you look at the
disappeared women in Juarez, these are not the affluent. These are typically poor women. When the free trade agreements happened, most of the rural areas of
southern Mexico were decimated. So what happened is that
workers in the southern states of Mexico were forced to migrate to look for work in the factory settings. If a woman disappears in Ciudad Juarez, there are often no family
members there to look for them. (light soft music) (speaking in a foreign language) We know that patriarchy is
again a global phenomenon. But we also want to think about what the conditions are in Mexico. Finding these bodies is typically done by the family members. (light soft music) State officials have not been
investigating these crimes. Often the government would say, “She’s out with a boy”. “She’s out on the wrong side of town.” “She was a prostitute, she was drinking.” They articulate the women as
leading these double lives. In my interviews with several
of the family members, after the femicides
occurred, many of the men in relationships would say
to their woman comments like, “If you act out, if you start
showing your independence, “you too are going to end up a victim.” (light soft music) The role of the state has been taken on by the mothers of the
victims and the activists. They have been for years
holding restreos, or searches, out in the desert to look for remains. That creates a double trauma
because the initial trauma was the femicide, but the
trauma then that is taken on by the family members
having to go and search for their loved ones, search for clothing, search for bones in the desert,
is another set of trauma. And these restreos are doing
the work of the government. (speaking in a foreign language) And so one of the things we want to consider is who is culpable. (light soft music) There are many activists
who talk about the fact that American citizens can
be crossing into Juarez and targeting the women. One man that I interviewed
was working in Juarez as an investigative journalist
and he said that many of the men that he would interview
that crossed from El Paso would tell him, if you want
to rape and murder a woman, there is no easier place
than Cuidad Juarez. And that is because of the impunity. (dramatic music) No one is held responsible. The government doesn’t
want the public to think that these women were real
and therefore crimes continue. And that then feeds into a culture. (speaking in a foreign language) Typically one thing
that people want to know is how can we address
the issue of femicide. What can we do? One of the ideas was to boycott
some of the corporations that own the mahiladoras. However when speaking with the workers, they asked individuals not to boycott because that would then
mean a job loss for them. So it’s very important, the
first thing I always say is we need to speak with the
community members themselves. The community members are the ones embodying and living this reality. They are the ones that are on the front lines engaging the activism. Our role is to act in solidarity with them in whatever capacity that we can. But we follow their lead. Projects like the Faces of Femicide mural are extremely important. What the Faces of Femicide
does with the work of Juvia and Miclavio
is interview the mothers about their daughters lives. What were their dreams? What were their aspirations? What were they studying? What did they want to accomplish? To show the world that this
was an actual human being and the government cannot erase or engage in cultural amnesia. (speaking in a foreign language) One of the things that’s also
really important to remember is that we cannot engage in stereotyping. And currently what’s going on
with the Trump administration is it functions to just fuel
those negative stereotypes. Mexicans as rapists,
Mexicans as criminals. These poor brown women, no,
these are women with agency. These are women leading social movements. These are women with unique stories. Rape against women is a global phenomenon. Gendered violence is a global phenomenon. This is in no way, shape or form a Mexican problem or something inherent to a Mexican sensibility. (speaking in a foreign language) (light soft music)

Thank you, dr Nina Lozano for speaking like that about us mexican people. It's unbelievable what happens in Juarez. I can't imagine what is like to be a woman ln Juarez. I would be unable to sleep if i lived there. It's so sad and unfair. Ya son años de desapariciones de mujeres y nadie hace nada, ya basta!! STOP IT!!😢😠

I really wish the media drew more attention to this. Attention to all the lifes lost and children murdered. THIS IS REAL. When I heard all the horrific things that had been done to little Ana Maria I started crying. We need to do everything we can to help the people of Ciudad Juarez and try to make a difference. All my love goes to the families and inhabitants of Ciudad Juarez who have suffered great loss ❤ Stay strong 🌱❤.

There's a lot of theories about who is doing this, there's even a movie with Jennifer López where the murders are Americans buying girls from México, people also say it could be a group of Satan worshipers. The only truth is that there's no other place in México where this happens, only here, there's murders everywhere yes, but this is the only city where the murders against women are alarming.

You talked about Ciudad Juárez? wow, that's, surprising. But it sucks at the same time. Whenever I crossed the board to go to school, there's a pink cross at the very beginning of the bridge, meaning like a memorial for those girls/women who lost their life. I feel so bad. They don't deserve that! Let's pray for the innocent girls who have been taken away from their families and pray for the victims who passed away.

BTW, I went to that High School 1:50

This is so sad and so real. We need to spread awareness and let people know that we are not going to just sit pretty and do everything we're told to do. We have to fight, we have to get dirty and for once not worry about our appearance and what people think of us. This is so upsetting that women have been treated this way since the beginning of time. this is terrible how could someone think they could just take someone's daughter that way

hese acts against women is indeed a transgression against the universal mother for even these men who violated these women, life loved these men, nurtured them while growing up, a mother figure cared for their needs and assisted their growth and increase in strength. How sad is to see a man spit on their own life for every time they transgress a female (no matter how low they perceive this female) they spit and loath on the love that allowed for them to be raised as men, they bring to themselves all those hateful acts back into their own life, condemning their own legacy, condemning their own lineage.

Oh simple mind, when are you going to learn endless power and joy comes from transcending your own animal like desires. Oh simple mind, raise your eyes higher for you are endless, your begin from the head up not the waist down. Oh simple mind, raise your eyes, erect your posture for long ago life loved you enough and give you the opportunity to realized you no longer walk on four. Oh simple mid, stop chasing your endless shinning illusions, your temporary illusions of power and force for the lower energy center does not lead to realizing your eternal and joyful self.

Oh simple mind, open your eyes and realized the hate you create brings down the strength and essence of a what a man is designed to be. Oh simple mind, the strength within is to stop hating your own self, for your attempt to kill that within yourself keeps showing up time and time again. Oh how simple mind, the aggression is toward your own self….For the universe pitty you, for how many life times will it take for you to love the mother who has cared for you time and time again. Oh simple man, you continued to fail your own people.

I hate suffering on conscious creatures but those parents choose to reproduce and bringing life into an already desparate situation, they have minimal means to survive and still choose to have children. Its extremely selfish for humans to keep doing this generation after generation. The whole planet would be a better place if most people stop thinking its ok to have children no matter what their situation is.
