What Causes Tourette Syndrome? ft. Mayim Bialik

August 19, 2019

BLOCKO: Hey there, welcome to Life Noggin! Back when I was in grade school, one of my
classmates had Tourette Syndrome, a type of neurological disorder. People at school laughed and made fun of her. But I’d like to think that if everyone knew
more about her condition, they wouldn’t have treated her this way. People with Tourette syndrome are already
at a higher risk for depression and the bullying they often face in school surely doesn’t
help. So, to help make the world a more accepting
and knowledgeable place, let’s talk about what Tourette Syndrome really is. I brought my friend Mayim Bialik from YouTube
and the TV show the big bang theory to help explain! MAYIM: Thanks Blocko! The main manifestations of Tourette Syndrome
are tics, which are uncontrollable and repetitive movements, noises, and vocalizations. Some can be painful, but most aren’t. Tics are separated into Simple Tics and Complex
Tics. The first are less obvious and only involve
a few muscle groups. They can show up as things like shoulder shrugging,
head jerking, excessive sniffling, or lots of blinking. Vocal tics include grunting, repetitive clearing
of the throat, and even barking. When more muscle groups are involved or vocalizations
are a bit more elaborate, that’s when tics are considered complex. These can include a combination of movements
like bending, flailing, jumping, and punching. The uncontrollable use of swear words, derogatory
phrases, and even racial slurs is another type of complex tic, called coprolalia. It only affects about 10-15% of people with
Tourette’s but it can be very stressful and embarrassing for the person involved. BLOCKO: It’s known that the severity of
these symptoms can be affected by one’s emotional state. When people are calm and focused, symptoms
are known to improve. Tics are usually the worst during early teen
years, but thankfully, most symptoms significantly improve through late adolescence and some
people grow out of them completely! Tourette Syndrome is 3-4 times more likely
to affect boys than girls and scientists are beginning to realize that this condition is
actually a whole lot more common than they originally thought. They now estimate that about one in every
160 kids have some variation of Tourette Syndrome. It’s known for a fact that people with Tourette’s
are at increased risk of developing depression and substance abuse problems.[23] This could
be due to the bullying, judgment, and alienation they often experience, but various groups
say that welcoming them with a supportive environment can help them feel more comfortable. MAYIM: The cause of Tourette’s isn’t yet
known, but experts do know that genes play a part. It’s thought that environmental and developmental
factors do too. Within the brain, there are a number of abnormalities
that experts think could be connected to the condition, but more research is needed to
know for sure. These abnormalities are seen in the frontal
lobes, cortex, and basal ganglia, as well as the circuits that connect them all and
the neurotransmitters that help relay messages between nerve cells. BLOCKO: While there isn’t a cure yet, a
number of holistic and medicinal treatments do exist. Some people have found that exercising and
singing has stopped their tics and something called Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for
Tics has been proven to reduce symptoms by teaching people how to control their tics
when they feel an urge to move! In very severe cases of Tourette Syndrome,
medications can be prescribed or brain devices implanted but these scenarios are rare. MAYIM: We hope that since now you know more
about this condition, you’ll be more understanding and accepting of people with Tourette Syndrome. BLOCKO: If you have this condition, and feel
comfortable with sharing, let us know how tourette syndrome has affected you. What do you want other people to know
about it?

I was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome when I was thirteen, however, I have never had tics before then so the people around me were very confused. A couple of months before I had shown symptoms of Tourettes, I had been watching videos about it and my family thought I was copying them. It was so hard to explain to them that I couldn't help it but no one believed me and there are some family members who don't but as long as some people believe me that's ok. School is terrible, I am being made fun of for something I cannot control and people always tell me to keep still or quiet but I have not told anyone because I don't want them to know. I now have the "great" nicknames of "twitchy" and "seizure girl" (Because apparently when I have multiple tics at once it looks like a seizure according to people at school) Anyways that's my story blehhh.

I also have tourretes syndrome, not as much on the severe side as a lot of people but still decently prominent with less distinguishable tics like rapid coughing and blinking. It’s also good that I’m going to an arts high school because no one really notices my tics or knows I have tourretes except for my friends. The thing is in general the more extreme parts of the spectrum is often shown in media and that’s why I’m glad people are talking more about it like in this video. Good on ya

I have Tourette’s syndrome and autism. I have verbal tics and non verbal tics. If you’re Curious of what it feels like to have it, I will explain what it’s like to have it the best I can. Hold your breath. Hold it until you feel pain and need to breathe. I’m able to control my tics for 90 seconds, but when I feel to much pain, I need to tic. It’s painful to hold it in, just like it’s painful to hold your breath

I have tourettes syndrome. Most people don't believe me because mine got better but I was diagnosed at 8. I used to get made fun of. I was in foster care before and my foster mother told me tourettes wasn't real but she was a nurse. Yeah well I want to know what nursing school you came from because it's 100% real. Her kids elbow me in the side for doing them. One time this one girl punched me in both eyes to the point where they were black and blue and broke a blood vessel. She also threw me in the snow and made me eat it. Also not going to mention the fact that she broke my glasses. But I still like to share my experience. I have both motor and vocal tics. Back then I used to bite my cheek to the point it would bleed, blink my eyes hard to the point I would eventually get a headache, bang my knees off the desk to the point I would get black and blue marks. It was bad but now I just jerk my head to the side and blink my eyes hard. I also have a new tic where I look at the sun. When I told my eye doctor about it and I told him it's causing my eyes to get worse, he said "well then don't look at the sun" well only if it was that easy. My doctor had the nerve to tell me coughing can't be a tic. Um excuse me.. anything can be a tic. But thank you for reading all of this and this is some of my experience with tourettes syndrome. Remember don't make fun of someone that can't control something. It's not their fault.

One thing I would want other people to know about Tourette's as someone who has it is that TS can be an invisible disability. Not everyone's tics are loud or visibly disruptive and even seemingly mild cases of Tourette can impact tasks like typing, driving, or even just carrying a coffee mug across the room. I've had loads of people accuse me of faking my Tourette's just because I don't have swearing tics.

But i have read that one girl tried to "calm down and focus and focus on mind not to tics ". But i dont know if its 100% works but that girl try and it works. I hope you gaiss that have tics can try this method and share the result, i really want to know, this method might be work!! Even though this method not gonna work in a day , you should try to focus everyday!! It might be work!!

I have Tourette’s and i was diagnosed when i was 6. Early Elementary was stress full from people always asking about why do i keep making sounds or randomly moving so much. I just explained to them what was wrong and helped them understand I’m just the same as anyone else. I am 20 now and i still take medication to help control my tics. I can say for sure though since i was a child my symptoms have improved massively. I can now feel when i want to move and hold it back for the most part. Without my medicine I have mostly head jerking. Sometimes i bark but hey it’s not all that bad. I have had a supportive and caring family throughout my life and I’m glad they helped me through any stress and depression from being bullied growing up.

I could even remember the little things like going on a school tour and just being soooo nervous and not wanting to go because of my anxiety. And the ocd comes into play if say there is smudge on my iPad I HAVE TO wipe the whole screen with my hand just to feel satisfied, and adhd is really not noticeable to others but I can some what sense it. My tics include : biting my cheek/ gums and grazing the skin off my tung, blinking uncontrollably , humming under my breath, I used to have shoulder shrugging but it’s gone and that’s about it that is a little part of my story and I hope that everyone will be able to accept people with this condition thx for reading if you did 🙂

But then also i now have the eye twitching + nose sniffing.
The eye one is very very very irritating, hard to control..i have other minor tics as well, the fibger stretching, toes stretching but these are very minors and even i dont notice them.
Nobody makes fun of me.. they usually dont talk about it, my friends all know about my tics and they get it. Not that they know what tic is but they know im this way and they dont care about it.
But i really don't like being stared at in public transport . You may think i dont see you staring at me, but beleive me, if you're staring even from behind my back, i can tell.
