Viruses on the IBM 5155 Portable Personal Computer

December 11, 2019

Hello everyone, welcome back, today we’re gonna be taking a look at some viruses and other… interesting humorous programs running on the IBM 5155. In it’s brilliant amber monochrome screen. So the first I’ll like to sow– (lol) show you… is called “Drain”. These first programs all came with the computer, I don’t know where they came from… you might know more about them than I do, but… they’re pretty entertaining to me. So it’s called Drain, we’ll go ahead and run it… *5155 drive noises* So it gives you back the DOS prompt… So it gives you back the DOS prompt…
*error beep* Pressing a key, (?) “SYSTEM ERROR”… “Water detected in Drive A:”… “Standbye (typo xD) while water is drained…..” “Standbye (typo xD) while water is drained…..”
*”dripping” noises* *”dripping” noises* Plays with the PC speaker…
*”dripping” noises* *”dripping” noises* *dripping gets more heavy* *dripping dies out* “Spin dry cycle starting”
*triangle sine sweep* *triangle sine sweep* It’s actually spinning the disk right now…
*triangle sine sweep* *triangle sine sweep* “System OK now…. you may proceed.” So, that’s just a little interesting program… Oh, that’s a little fuzzy, isn’t it? *keyboard gods talking to us* So the next, to show you… umm, let’s see… There is “Keyclick”, which just… makes every key produce an audible tone every time you hit it. Not sure if you can hear that, the keyboard’s “clicky” enough already… *clicking* *clicking* So, might be useful if, I dunno…
*clicking* you need to know when you’re pressing a key… but could be used to annoy someone, also. Alright, next, what we got… It’s– oh yeah, there was this interesting program called… “Comm”… *5155 drive noises* *high-pitch beeping* “PLEASE WAIT” “ESTABLISHING LINK”
*high-pitch beeping* *high-pitch beeping* *sine wave* *paced high-pitched beeping* *paced lower-pitched beeping* *paced high-pitched beeping* “Please be AWARE that you are entering the
*paced high-pitched beeping* “Internal Control System of the
*paced high-pitched beeping* “Department of Defense”?
*paced high-pitched beeping* *paced high-pitched beeping* Holy crap.
*paced high-pitched beeping* *paced high-pitched beeping* *paced lower-pitched beeping* *paced high-pitched beeping* “Please enter your access code :” Now, I have no idea… what a good access code would be… let’s try “password” (so original) *paced high-pitched beeping* “WRONG ACCESS CODE!! PLEASE TRY AGAIN.” *paced high-pitched beeping* How ’bout “password” backwards… *paced high-pitched beeping* *silent “oh” from Dan* Alright, you get one more try… *paced high-pitched beeping* *guitar hero with keyboard on expert difficulty* *siren sounds* “UNAUTHORIZED USER!!!!” “Line trace is being executed.”
*siren sounds* *siren sounds* Wait for it.
*siren sounds* *siren sounds* “YOU IN BIG TROUBLE NOW, BOY……” And… gives you control back to MS-DOS. So, let’s see what else we got… There is “Bugs”, .com. “Resident Screen Eating Utility “Use {ALT+B} to eat your screen…” Alright! So a bunch of bugs come out and eat your… lines off the screen… Pretty neat. Hit “Enter”, goes back the way it was. Good screensaver, I guess. I like doing directory listings.
(– Danooct1, June 2012) So, I guess… Alright, we’ll look at “Birds”… uses the PC speaker. Sounds like birds chirping. *loud “birds chirping” sound* Kind of.
*loud “birds chirping” sound* *loud “birds chirping” sound* *loud “birds chirping” sound* Go on. Go… Continue! Usually does more than that. Usually does more than that.
*5155 drive noises* *5155 drive noises* Oh, well, I guess it’s done. There’s a few other bird calls, but… We don’t need to wait for those to happen. Alright, let’s see. Anything else…? How about “Willtell” .exe. Plays the William Tell overture. *William Tell Overture Finale plays* I don’t know what these lines represent, if anything…
*William Tell Overture Finale plays* *William Tell Overture Finale plays* Maybe notes? *William Tell Overture Finale plays* It’s actually fairly accurate.
*William Tell Overture Finale plays* *William Tell Overture Finale plays* Alright, this goes until line 100…
*William Tell Overture Finale plays* *William Tell Overture Finale plays* *RIP* So, we don’t need to go that far. So we’ll just end the program right there. Swap over to B: Drive… Take a look at some viruses we got here… “dur” Agh. The B: Drive on this machine is a little flaky, so… Give me just a minute… to swap out… the disks here… Can we use A: Drive instead? Okay, so we got a few viruses here… Everybody likes “Cascade”, right? (*cue the Daniel Bryan ((or Danooct1 Bryan)) “YES!” chant*) Let’s see, what else, “Pingpong”? Never seen Pingpong on a amber monochrome (screen) before. There it goes. See what else we got… “Burma”, that’ll be pretty cool to see. *error beep* Yeah. I guess Pingpong’s kinda screwing with it. Gonna need to do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete here… so Burma doesn’t infect everything. So it filled the screen with dollar signs this time. Ctrl-Alt-Delete… Come on… Ctrl-Alt-Delete… (??), give me just a minute… Gotta do a hard reset here. *crack, most likely Dan* *5155 boot sequence* Alright, now we can swap back to the virus disk… Damn it– okay. Now, we never got to see cascade happen. How about… See what else we got. Not a whole lot. Well, everybody likes “Techno”, so why not? We’ll end the vi– (END TEH VIRUSES) the video on everybody’s favorite virus. *”Techno” theme plays* Hopefully, Techno will make a… appearance(??).
*”Techno” theme plays* (Does he mean Cascade if he said “appearance”?)
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* *RIP* Yeah, there we go. So a nice slow, raining effect, of the characters. Due to Cascade. *”Techno” theme plays* And goes…
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* I always liked that…
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* To pause the Cascade do to it’s thing and then Techno just continues.
*”Techno” theme plays* (So adorable, tired Dan.)
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* *RIP* Yeah. It’s a very soothing sound. That Cascade makes with the PC speaker. We’ll let Techno finish up, then we’ll… End the video there, there’s not much more to see. Almost there… (for me, too. The captions. xD) Almost… *”Techno” theme plays* There it goes.
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* Left that one “H” alone.
*”Techno” theme plays* *”Techno” theme plays* *RIP, successfully* We know Cascade, despite being pretty much harmless in the original variant… and quite cute to watch, that will take up a lot of your time, if you had to wait for all the characters to drop all the time. Alright, that’s about it for the viruses on the IBM 5155, portable, personal computer.

Looks like Williamtell’s lines it displays are either chords or Assembly code.
