Using Food as Medicine

The concept of using food as medicine
has been around for a very long time. Hippocrates said 2,000 years ago, “let
food be your medicine and let medicine be your food.” So often physicians today
think of medications first and food may be somewhere down the line. If we started thinking as a whole about using food as medicine, the impact could be you know
extremely beneficial to everybody. It would change much of the issues of
chronic disease that we see. This culinary medicine class is a
collaboration between Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the
Department of Nutritional Sciences. So we have the medical students and the
nutritional students working together. Culinary medicine is really cool because
you examine and try to manipulate the diets, so that way we can have the best
health outcomes without using medications. So on a week-to-week basis,
there’s usually a certain case study that promotes a certain disease. So this
week was hypertension and we cook dishes based on those requirements. And then we sit down and talk about our recipes and how it how we can avoid that specific
disease, how to deal with it through food. This shows them how biochemistry is
everywhere, it’s in medicine it’s in cooking. If they understand the science
behind nutrition, they will be better doctors. They will give better advice to
their patients.

    This is so very important. It is more than about time to start training doctors in the power of food, and the body's ability to use food to activate its healing mechanisms. This can be used for anything. Nutrition and food healing should be required in their curriculum throughout the career.

    Hopefully they are talking about eliminating food full of antibiotics and hormones (most animal products) and processed food, and promoting organic.

    This is so wonderful – what would be even more wonderful is to do a few of these with the food highlighted toward some of the areas focused on – Hypertension, Parkinson's or other disease areas
