The opioid epidemic and Indiana’s workforce

December 23, 2019

Economic implications of the opioid
epidemic in the U.S. include compromised workforce, reduced economic growth and
higher demands in treatment capacity. While many policy efforts are underway
to address this crisis, we don’t fully understand the impact of the epidemic on
workforce development and best approaches for improvement. Through the
IU responding to the Addictions Crisis Grand Challenge we will study demand and
supply of treatment capable workforces and impacts of policies aiming to expand
treatment access. We aim to provide research-based evidence for advising
policy and economic decision makers, businesses and local recovery
organizations on labor education and workforce policy. Our goal is to see
employers able to find suitable workforce needs and to ensure an
increase in the availability of treatment resources.
