The Candida Spit Test – MYTH #11

The Candida Spit Test – MYTH #11
Hi, I’m Dr. Jeff McCombs, developer of the McCombs Anti-Candida Plan for Health, Vitality,
and Transformation. Today, I’d like to spend a little time with you and discuss the Candida
spit test. The Candida spit test was promoted as a marketing tool in the mid- 90s by a multilevel
marketing company that sold an anti-Candida product. It was promoted as a fast, easy,
reliable test for people to perform in their homes to validate that they had a fungal Candida
infection. I’d like to explain to you a little bit why that is not a valid test and
give you some more information behind valid testing.
To perform the test, you take a glass of water, first thing in the morning, and spit into
it. If the spit or mucus forms legs, little extensions down into the water, this is a
sign, supposedly, that you have a Candida infection. Of course, this doesn’t differentiate
between a Candida yeast or a Candida fungal infection. But the truth of the matter is
there are many things which can cause the mucus to thicken to such an extent that it
would form these legs down into the water. A common one is dehydration. Now, if you’ve
been sleeping all night, and your mouth is closed, you haven’t been drinking water.
When you wake up in the morning, you’re gonna be a little dehydrated, so the mucus
will be thicker and form these strands, or legs, into the water.
Other things that can cause the same thickening of the mucus could be airborne allergies,
food allergies. You could have a virus, bacteria, yeast, mold, fungal infection, or parasite
infection. Cold weather can also cause thickening of the mucus, and anybody who has lived in
a cold climate can attest to that. Weather changes can also cause thickening of the mucus.
So there are a lot of things that can cause thickening of the mucus.
If you consider the body burden that most Americans and most people around the world
hold in terms of toxin, there are generally over 1000 different toxins that are in the
body at any time. Each and any one of these can cause the mucus to thicken. So when we’re
doing a Candida spit test, we’re not testing for anything, specifically, because thickened
mucus can be a general indicator of many different types of allergic reactions or responses by
the body and its immune system. If you want to do a saliva test, you would do a saliva
antibody test. This is a valid test that’s performed at a lab. Laboratories like BioHealth
Diagnostics, Genova Diagnostics, Diagnostics Labs will perform saliva antibody tests.
An antibody is a protein that is produced by our bodies’ white cells in response to
a substance that is non-human, or non-self. This is a way that the body uses to identify
that substance again should re-exposure occur later on.
Other valid tests would be blood tests, stool tests, direct cultures of blood or stool or
another tissue. Metametrix Labs does PCR testing, which is a genetic testing that can be with
the stool or blood. Great Plains Laboratories does organic acid testing. This is testing
of by-products of cellular metabolism from Candida. These are all different tests that
can be performed to evaluate whether or not you have a systemic fungal Candida infection.

The best way to use this information is to use several tests in conjunction with each
other, along with a case history, present signs and symptoms, past history of antibiotic
use, and whether or not you’ve done a Candida protocol and whether it’s produced good
results for you. If you take all this information, combine it together, you’re going to get
a clearer picture of whether or not you have a Candida infection.
I hope you have found this information to be helpful. If you’d like more information,

This is Dr. Jeff McCombs, and thank you once again.

@tomcamp6023 We don't recommend Diflucan as it is a toxic drug and does not work systemically. Threelac is a 3 strain probiotic, probiotics do not get rid of Fungus. On Dr. McCombs candida plan we eliminate the fungus first before adding the probiotics. Otherwise there is no space for the probiotics to reestablish in the gut. We use Flora Prime a 12 strain probiotic. Threelac also contains Bacillus subtilis is the basis for one of the most powerful antibiotics on the planet.

@RICHARDFLORES2100 All of those symptoms can be attributed to systemic fungal candida and antibiotic use. Repeated use of antibiotics can create many, many imbalances in the body.

TThank you sir.I have done so much research.many symptoms are the same as mine.I have set an appointment with a friends grandfather.a doctor.I hope there is a way to test if I do have candida.I read reports where many doctors don't know much about this very bad and hidden sickness.I just want to be normal again. And healthy.I'm only 25.but I feel like I'm 45…

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 4, 2011 at 7:29 pm

@RICHARDFLORES2100 The best approach is to use a history of antibiotic, chemotherapy, or
steroid use, with a list of symptoms, plus blood antibody and a stool test
that uses PCR testing. A test alone won't tell you anything, although PCR
testing is the most accurate. All tests check for the presence of candida,
but don't differentiate between the normal yeast form or the pathogenic
    fungal form.

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 4, 2011 at 7:30 pm

Part 2: Metametrix Labs uses PCR testing in their stool test –
Most people will test for some presence of candida as it is a normal part
of the tissue flora in its yeast form. The presence of yeast candida is
generally considered to be a healthy sign.
Depending on the test and many other factors, accuracy will vary. If
you're eliminating the fungal form, this isn't reflected in a test, as you
may still test for the presence of candida which could be in it's yeast
    form.

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 4, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Part 3: Blood tests don't test for the presence of candida, just antibodies
against candida or some of its cellular components. Some antibodies will
stay present for a long time, depending on the severity of an infection.
IgM antibodies would be for a recent infection within the past 45 days or
so. IgG antibodies would be for exposure in the past. People with a
history of lung problems associated with candida may have detectable
    levels of IgE antibodies.

@commonsense2008 Part 1 . Make sure that you're keeping your blood sugar balanced. Any good detoxification approach requires a lot of fuel for the body. The Plan doesn't require you to eat less. If anything, you may need to eat more. If you get tired, irritable, sleepy, or moody when you go too long without food, you most likely have a low blood sugar issue (hypoglycemia). Hypoglycemia can affect the following: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid; suppress the immune system.

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 7, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Part 2- cause adrenal fatigue and sugar cravings and promote inflammation; cause a lot of different disturbances in the nervous system such as anxiety, depression, nervousness, etc. You’ll need to eat at least a small handful of food every 45-60 minutes. That can be 1/3 of a celery stick or carrot, ¼ of an apple, ½ of an avocado, a rice cake, a meal, some veggies, etc., to keep your blood sugar balanced. It is very important that you follow this strictly, as almost doesn’t work.

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 7, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Part 3 – Anyone with problems handling fruit, should stick to celery, meats, etc., for snacks. Celery is very easy to prepare and carry with you. Plan your day around having enough of something with you at all times. As an example – if you eat breakfast at 8am, then snack at 9, 10, 11; lunch at 12; snack at 1, 2, 3, 4; dinner at 5; snack at 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; bed. It is important to do this for at least 4 months.

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs February 7, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Par 4 – Additionally, it’s important to start the day with protein and have protein at every meal.
What are your symptoms? What are you trying to address with the Plan?

  • Reply Jake Bradley March 1, 2011 at 7:26 pm

First, I do not acknowledge the validity of the "spit test" nor do I endorse Dr. McCombs plan. I am simply pointing out possible errors.

1:00 Yeasts are a kind of fungus. Candida is a genus of yeast fungus. This is like differentiating between a tangerines and oranges.
2:00 Not sure what you meant by toxins. Of course there are toxins which are byproducts of cellular metabolism – is that what you mean, or are you indicting other things as well? Could you be more specific?

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs March 2, 2011 at 10:01 pm

@jzbradley In the video, the toxins that I mentioned are from the chemicals and heavy metals that accumulate in the body's tissues, creating a toxic body burden. These chemicals suppress the immune system, create cancers, and cause neurological diseases and hormonal disturbances.

  • Reply camlpg July 19, 2011 at 6:32 am

In Canada, where I live, the tests this doctor is talking about for Candida infection will never be authorized by a general practitioner through the medicare system. If I wanted to get testing for yeasts/fungus I would have to fork out hundreds of dollars to a naturopathic doctor and to my knowledge in the city I live in there are only a handful of ND in a city with a metro area of one million people.

    Hello Dr. McCombs,
I have been suffering from 'brain fog' for over a month. I have been to several doctors and have done numerous tests, but none have been able to explain the cause of it, all dismissing it being 'stress'. After reading online that a symptom of candida overgrowth can be brain fog and similar cognitive dysfunctions, I now suspect that that could be my problem. I'm a nineteen year old male who has always been healthy, until now. (continued)

  • Reply sunp January 5, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I did the spit test and it indicated that I may have candida overgrowth due to strands of saliva floating down, but after watching this I realize it may not be reliable. What tests do you recommend I do instead, and where? I do not live in the United States, but I am aware that some labs in the US perform tests for customers overseas. Also, I'm sure you get this all the time, but what are your thoughts on the product "Threelac?" It claims to be able to cure candida without diet changes. Thanks!

  • Reply dipstick3031 May 23, 2012 at 6:45 am

But here is another question.. I was convinced I had Candida problems.. Almost all the symptomes matched. (Docter thinks its ''burnout'' and/or ''depresion'')

Now I did this ''spytt in a glass of water'' test and I get no strings going down at all.. Nothing.. The water is clear as glass.. Is the test in this case a reliable test to proof that I DONT have candida???

  • Reply MiCompre October 18, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Well, you can't prove a negative. ( E.g, if you couldn't drive, how could you prove that? You couldn't.)

  • Reply sensorwatch November 2, 2012 at 1:10 am

Did any one realize that always the doctors.. tell the patients that they need another test (a paid one) to be sure of something simple.??So always is money involved, This system is prepared to make people spend money… and finish on the Doctors Offices , Labs, and Hospitals… So if you are suspicious about having this infection start consuming the food that will going to fight and prevent the infection, Cont. 1 of 2

  • Reply sensorwatch November 2, 2012 at 1:15 am

Cont. 2 of 2 …..This Doctor already told you that at any specific time in our body are more then 1000 chemicals, (most of them from prescribed drugs. and OTC.) So start detoxification of your body.. is the first step. Search for '' 10 Foods for Candida Treatment – Natural Cure ''

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs November 10, 2012 at 2:01 am

We have not found diet alone to be effective against systemic fungal Candida. Certain foods such as coconut, coconut oil, oregano oil, garlic etc only suppress the candida, but not reverse the fungal form to its healthy yeast form. Many people who try that approach end up getting all the symptoms back as soon as they go back to a regular diet. Lab test have shown Undecenoic Acid (Candida Force) to be the most effective against fungus.Part 1 of 2

  • Reply Jeffrey McCombs November 10, 2012 at 2:04 am

Part 2 of 2, Boosting the Th1 immune response, along with replenishing the body with probiotics (after you have neutralize the fungus) is also important. We recommend following a whole food based diet, and doing a sweating protocol in a sauna or hot bath to eliminate toxins through the skin.

  • Reply PinkPanther December 1, 2012 at 7:08 am

the best test is done by avoiding having sugar or carb. sources for 3 days. if you found yourself craving sugar or sweet then you may have Candida infection

  • Reply Rosumisorimu January 4, 2013 at 3:19 pm

What if I've slept the whole night with closed mouth, breathing through the nose only and my spit still clearly had "legs" after only 10 seconds after spitting and after a minute or two those legs touched the bottom of the glass?

Is that at least a little bit more reliable?

  • Reply Mark Spencer April 23, 2013 at 8:07 pm

There might be SOMETHING to the spit test… When I was raging with candida the spit test showed positive. This morning I tried again thinking perhaps it'd come back — I have no overt symptoms like I'd had before but I do have some of the more subtle symptoms which may or may not be caused by candida. The spit test at least showed I'm clear. I would like a more thorough test to be sure, but perhaps we shouldn't discard the spit test entirely?

After researching things and symptoms myself I found the one thing that works for me. The one natural thing that changed my life for the better. My grandmother went down this road and they all said the same until it turned into cancer 3 x and she died. I refused to be told I was just imagining it. I did this test and found my problem

Yeast is a fungus–so that part of this video doesn't make sense. As for the dehydration part, that is easy to control for and eliminate as a possible false positive. The rest of the possible thick mucous causes are something I would have to look into. Also a lot of candida antibody tests do not work–I have seen this happen over and over again.

This guy is nothing more than a mouthpiece for MSM e.g test, test , test, another test and you end up where you begin. Of course, if you have insurance they'll add a few more tests. LOL Medical testing MAY have a place however, it is not absolute. Testing will either reveal what they're looking for or it won't reveal what the system is included in the testing parameters. Typically testing leaves you with more questions than answers. The common sense approach is to look at known offensive foods, lifestyle conflicts and emotions. Reconcile your emotional health and remove known offenders ( sugar, chemicals, most commercial grains and dairy etc) and slowly heal. Abstinence is a healer. Hears proof… Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and nights. He fasted away his demons. After all he was confronted by Satan. Satan can be a metaphor for toxic food. If certain foods make you sick then those foods are your personal demon(s) ! Jesus healed so can you ! Remove the offensive food, emotions and lifestyle habits ! Heal thyself. As food for additional thought 35% of drug therapy is claimed to be from the placebo effect. Aka Mind of Matter ! As a person THINKETH so are they !
