Fever chills Little cough aching all symptoms of the dreaded flu Of course the flu season is here along with a new even more much more serious strain What do you need yeah, I know you don’t feel good, I don’t feel good either no I have the same cold that you have and pretty sure you gave me this cold I can’t lay down in bed and pet your back. I have things. I have to do let me get you some juice I Don’t really have that much empathy because I as well have the exact same cold you do and I am doing laundry and dishes and Dealing with the kit. I’ve already felt your head. You don’t have a fever. I’m not checking your head again. You’re perfectly fine I will check your head one more time. Yeah, you still don’t have a fever I know that you feel like you’re going to die, but you’re not going to die you just have a cold okay Enjoy the rest of your man cold What happened in my house between me and my husband just Recently we had the same strain and he was down for three weeks He’s like the most strong like sensible man when he’s not sick, but when he’s sick Oh, my gosh like jad he will not leave the bed I’m still doing everything I went out on a hike, and I have the same okay so mate may I have the floor with dr. Ordon floor. All right all right hear me out hear me out ladies new research published in British Medical Journal says Physiological differences between men and women may lead to different responses to colds and viruses Maybe there’s a reason why us men are so wimpy sensitive so okay, okay? Dr.. Cal soo This is one researcher in fairness says that men may really suffer more than women Which is several animal and human studies and found that? Testosterone could dampen the immunes response to influenza and other viral respiratory infections this researcher sounds so so you know I maybe just maybe We’re wimpier when it comes to cold and flu for a reason Opinion now there may be a reason though there may be a reason Yeah, we will continue to love you and support you and honor you through your your cold or whatever But what we will not do what we will not do is legitimize your behavior Your hormonal days of the month We’re entitled to a little tea let me just back up a second Take this let you take this one. Okay, all right dr. Nina. I think on the same wavelength here I personally feel like Maybe if you guys want a little extra. Love you Just have a hard time asking and then so then when you have a cold or the flu It’s the perfect chance to then just lay back And then you have a reason for us of a region and do everything for you But just ask if you want a little extra cuddling Mitchell periods are real. Those are real studies Researchers data even a researcher. It’s a little bit tongue-in-cheek Obviously, this is one of those things that it’s not some big formal study but there is nothing better than as a guy you get a little sick you feel bad and It I would I’ll be the first to admit it kind of it’s kind of nice when do you need some hot tea yeah? But you pretend like your illness is a strong 9 You can convince yourself an illness is a 9 if it means you’re gonna. Get snacks and key A little more a little more love yeah that every good second That’s the truth, and I will say we rarely do get sick And that’s maybe what the important topic is here because this time of year if you’re around someone who has Influenza try to keep your distance a little bit wash those hands Don’t touch your eyes your nose keep that immune system strong whether male or female were we’re in this together We’re both going to get the flu You
– Do you want to know
a way to dramatically reduce your risk of getting pneumonia? – [Audience] Yes. – Take a trip to the dentist. A new study by Virginia
Commonwealth University found that people who
don’t visit the dentist for preventative care have
an 86 percent greater risk of getting a bacterial pneumonia than those who visit two
or more times per year. They looked at these health records of more than 26,000 people nationwide. These regular dental
cleanings and check ups, what they do is they reduce
the risk of bacterial pneumonia by reducing the amount of
harmful bacteria in your mouth that could potentially migrate, get into your lungs, and look, for most people you
know luckily pneumonia’s not an every day occurrence. But for people who are
more at risk for pneumonia, life-threatening pneumonia this, it’s an interesting finding not that I’m not that surprised by it because we’ve seen a
connection between gum disease. – Heart disease. – Yeah and so- – Throat. – Right, strokes. – So just one more reason to have preventative dental cleanings. – Yeah, there’s definitely
a correlation there. Good oral hygiene and general health. – Did you all have a good time today? We’re so glad you could be with us. Thanks so much for watching at home. If you missed anything, hit

What’s the simple thing you can do to make your flu shot more effective smile I’m not even kidding a study in the journal of brain behavior and immunity found that having a positive mood on the day of your Vaccination improved ones protection, and it makes sense this was drew and I recently Giving our flu vaccine having a good time But if you’re in a good mood the day of the injection it boosted your antibody levels by up to fourteen percent We know that your psychology can affect your immune systems response Absolutely love this. I love it too, and it’s not only just your state of mood the day of the vaccine But just in general if you’re kind of a happy-go-lucky Person or you’ve been in a good mood for a few weeks that can also help and just think about how shocked everyone will be At the clinic where you get the flu shot You’ll make their day to a new look peak of flu season is expected at the u.s.. This winter It’s a good idea to get vaccinated the sooner the better we got a loo that affects people varies year to year That’s why you got to get it every single year stay up to date on your vaccinations. We are all protected, right You
The complications Joey is still dealing with he is not able to travel and is joining us now via Skype from Dallas and Joey first thing I want to say to you is how much respect I have for you After everything you’ve been through your resiliency the way that you are handling this I applaud you because So much has happened since you became ill you stayed positive But can you tell us how quickly you went from just feeling like you had the flu To realizing that this is serious. I could lose my life here. It was a matter of minutes I Got back to work within 45 minutes of returning from violence I was feeling light-headed and dizzy. I went home got home around 3:00 p.m.. And Around 11:00 p.m.. I was in the hospital And they were telling me I was losing my life, Joey you had gotten a flu shot correct Yes, I got the flu shot every year for the last six years this year was so different Well you know I think Joey one thing about the flu shot is we’re coming to understand more and more especially about the h3n2 strain of this Really severe flu season is that even though the flu vaccine Doesn’t necessarily prevent you from having the flu it is very effective at keeping you from dying from the flu So actually this year’s flu vaccine is about 39 percent overall effective in adults and about 59 percent overall effective in kids So I think you did the right thing to get the flu shot even though It was a horrible experience that you had it may have actually saved your life. I Definitely agree with that They saved my life. They gave up on me, and they didn’t expect me to be here So I definitely agree and will recommend everybody continue to get this one shot And I want people to understand what can happen when you’re infected with the influenza virus the flu virus itself infects you But it also puts you at risk for super infections you heard Joey mentioned that he developed an ammonia that pneumonia that that infection thing can then spread throughout your bloodstream Develop into something we we call sepsis in Joey’s case led to septic shock Such a massive drop in blood pressure Joey mentioned going unconscious, then a patient is put on obviously Antibiotics also put on medicines that that basically constrict your blood flow to your vital organs Which is why Joey lost? parts of his hands and his feet and The thing that I am so again proud of you for Joe is you could be sitting there negative spirits Why did this happen to me? I’m otherwise healthy I did all the right things Yet, you’ve stayed positive and I know There’s a lot you’re going through and one of the things to help you adjust to all the recent Changes is we actually reached out to hanger clinic and they’re going to have one of their national upper extremity specialists evaluate you if You’re a good candidate to be fit with one of their prosthetics hanger clinics gonna work with you to get the best prosthetic device that you need free of charge I Really appreciate that That’s been one of my biggest concerns Is I’m gonna move forward? I’m not the one to sit still and idle so anything that helps to continue life on I’m very grateful for Well joy we’re grateful that you are still alive and grateful that you’re sharing your story Keep those spirits up and honestly keep us posted. You truly are a resilient resilient young man And I think Joey’s story highlights once again We often ignore the flu season and and incidentally a lot of stories out there that oh You know the flu vaccine is worthless this year your point is very valid Which is there are people out there? Who will still get the flu but they may die if they did not have the flu vaccine because if nothing else what that does? Is it does build up your antibodies so that it gives your body a fighting chance? this flu season isn’t over what I would say is if you think you have the flu and you have a big time turn for the worse The sooner you get help the better You
It’s a medical story That’s so rare and so extreme that many doctors are still baffled by it and it all started out with some relatively minor flu-like Symptoms a word of warning some of the images you’re about to see are disturbing Christmas day, we’re going to go to a family dinner. Everything happened. So fast. It’s just it’s amazing that I’m here I’ve been married seven years and we have three kids Kevin’s an amazing person energetic outgoing Water-skied every chance he could get it was Christmas day 2016 I thought I had a cold that day feeling achy And I throat was getting a little bit sore the next day after Christmas and I still felt terrible [I] had appendicitis Before and that’s what the pain felt like I went to urgent care when they ran the flu tests and they ranch strap Tasks those both came back negative the next morning. I felt worse and we went to the emergency room. [I] just knew that This wasn’t good something was wrong [there] [guys] couldn’t stand up It was puking and fever was high so sick and [in] so much pain. Just couldn’t even walk His stomach kept getting larger and harder all of a sudden all these nurses and doctors his body was literally shutting down I just remember laying in the bed of agony my wife sitting next to me and telling me that my hands and feet don’t look The same [but] she loves me no matter what she was just prepping me for it was Japan They get emergency exploratory surgery the doctors found a liter and a half of pus in my abdomen They found that strap had gone from my throat to my stomach I’d gone through Septic shock then this is what happened to my hands and my feet because of that It’s three months later. I’ve had two amputations two more to go my right hand all of my fingers got removed My left hand is black all the way down to my wrist They’re going to totally take this hand completely off my right foot recently amputated. I left foot there’s a high probability that it will be eliminated [I] can feel the top of my foot, but I can’t feel [anyone] about There’s really not a lot I can do on my own my wife has to at least assist me brushing your teeth getting my clothes out the Wheelchair not motorized she literally has to be a part of every part of my life She does not complain and just loves me my kids. They want to come and [help] change [daddys] dressings We go daddy Daddy stores. Hi the worst moment [of] my life Thankfully, you know he’s still here It’s mind-blowing to think that I’m gonna lose my hands my feet awesome. Strep throat. It doesn’t even make any sense. It’s crazy stuff In the doctors daytime exclusive join us Via Skype from their home in Grand Rapids, Michigan please Welcome Kevin and Julie to our show and you know it’s remarkable Kevin to see you with a smile [on] your face after everything you’ve gone through I number one I’m just so sorry you’ve had to go through this, but also I want to applaud you and Julie and your family for [the] resilience that you’ve shown through all this How how are you doing now medically speaking? I’m doing pretty good [just] this week I had a surgery where they put it back on it, and That’s been a little painful But that’s hopefully to save the rest of my foot and for people watch and understand that [there] only one Kevin is one of two cases ever reported in men of [strep] Traveling down into the stomach leading to this is just Unheard of are you at a point now though as far as your body where you feel like you’re getting stronger? Yeah, I feel pretty good. I’m able to do some like ben exercises and that kind of stuff I I have strength within I don’t know why I don’t feel weak as a person by any means so I mean these surgeries are kind of They’ve taken a toll. Don’t get me wrong, but I feel strong I feel like I could handle it [um] I definitely want to overcome this and and I don’t want to just lay around in bed, so I definitely Wanna push yourself I I like I like [to] get through the surgery get on to the next one Well, I’m julie I have to say Things I love about you [is] that instead of focusing on what Kevin is lost you’ve chosen to focus on the fact that you still have your husband But obviously you all are going through a lot of changes Fair to say obviously and and yet July I keep seeing this positive energy [coming] from you Or where’s that come from um I think we just had to tremendous amount [of] work on our church? it’s been amazing our family impressive and amazing to care from the factor since I’m Amazing [I] mean, I think we just have this strong network of support And we’re just so thankful that this year is that the point that God could have taken it you
this year’s flu season has been one of the worst putting Americans in the hospital at the highest rate in nearly a decade and you’ve seen news about young seemingly healthy people losing their lives to the flu and of course we know that the elderly are most susceptible but surprisingly baby boomers are being hit especially hard by the flu this year and joining us to find out why this is happening is internist and chief medical officer of doctor on-demand dr. Ian Tong [Applause] things were happening that we wouldn’t expect to see that’s absolutely correct the thing that’s interesting about the flu if the flu changes every year it migrates a little bit the genetics change a little bit and so we get new strains and this year we’re seeing the h3n2 strain of this virus and we’ve seen it before but if you’re a baby boomer you may not have seen it early enough in life to build your so as a being a baby boomer admittedly that I just wasn’t subjected to certain viruses the viruses that we’re seeing this year and I did get my flu shot so in spite of the fact that it’s a different virus you still need to get your flu shot correct absolutely in fact there’s there’s influenza A and the h3n2 describes that but there’s also B and the B type you can you can actually get an A and B type in the same season so even if you’ve had the the exposed to one flu and you’ve had one episode of it you can actually get it again so even if you’ve had once but you haven’t had your vaccine I would still recommend that you get your flu vaccine after you’re feeling better so that you can build immunity against the other type this is a great opportunity to touch on telehealth which you’re involved with with doctor on demand and if you’re sick if you have a bad case of the flu you’re not sure how about a case of the flu you have this is a great way because you’re on the screen in the form of the video you have a physician that can look at you and say boy you’re sick that’s right in all 50 that’s that’s right actually a.m. and you may know that you’re sick but you may not know whether you’re sick with a virus or whether you have a bacterial illness and so that’s really why you need a board-certified physician to be able to ask you your history do an exam make a determination and if they can make the diagnosis of the flu they can start you on treatment very quickly the practice and the doctor on demand we’re really created to improve access to high quality care I think we’re transforming how people are gonna be actually treated for the flu in the future great points you may be upping your odds of catching the flu number one is sugar the intake of sugar eating or drinking a hundred grams of sugar that’s just two cans of soda can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by up to 40% and another one is sometimes you might not be getting enough protein and protein is so important they’re the building blocks for your immune system your body actually uses the dietary protein that you take in from food to make those proteins that your body uses to fight off those bad bugs so we want to make sure that we eat enough protein and number three alcohol just a few drinks can suppress the ability of white blood cells to multiply which you need to help fight off the flu Morra alcohol equals more damage to the immune system also chronic drinking impairs the ability of our cilia those little hairs inside the nose are so important to keep out bacteria and viruses when you’re when you’re subjected to those issues so and of course if you around somebody with the flu take care of all those precautions try try to avoid direct long as you sing happy birthday in your head is what I’ve been told you know people would wash them too quickly people do not wash their hands for long enough they get there really quickly and then they walk away and that’s not enough to wash off the virus or bacteria is that you may have on your fingers and or maybe under your nails don’t spread the illness dr. cha you’ve got a call to action correct I do I want everyone to know that because you can’t predict when you’re gonna get the flu and because you have to act so quickly it makes the most sense for you to register with doctor on-demand download the app in the Google Play Store or the App Store and you can download the app you’ll be able to register and then you can have a doctor within minutes when you need one awesome special promo code to save $25 on our website at the doctor’s tv.com you
This comes from one of our viewers. Ariana writes, “I’ve started seeing someone long distance and every weekend he visits, I get strep throat. I’ve gone to the doctor every time to rule out other causes but I’m convinced it’s my new boyfriend. Is it possible he could be a carrier even though he shows no symptoms?” Yes. You know what? You don’t need this show. Turn the TV off. No one’s allowed to come in studio. (crosstalk) That’s it, we’re done. Yeah you could be a carrier. Of course. I think it’s a little less common to be a source of infection if you’re asymptomatic and the boyfriend obviously isn’t saying every time he sees her that he has strep throat but I think the solution here for her is just to get her throat swabbed and his throat swabbed to see who’s actually carrying strep if anyone and also what antibiotics it’s sensitive to because you don’t want to necessarily keep taking antibiotics over and over for nothing if that’s not actually the source or the cause. People tend to at times get repeat infections and it could be a urinary tract infection. In this case for her if it is indeed strep throat, we don’t know the formal diagnosis, you can’t just keep going back in once a month and just taking antibiotics. Not only are they going to become less effective but over time the onslaught that that causes in your body it’s not just destroying bad bacteria. It’s destroying your entire microbiome, lots of potential side effects. It’s a bandaid. So you have to always then figure out why is this happening? And I applaud this person because it may be the boyfriend and so you have to do more research. Don’t just go see a different health care provider every time or go into an Urgent Care clinic and say, well I seem to have a urinary tract infection again Well here’s another prescription for an antibiotic. I seem to have strep throat again here’s another antibiotic
Well I also think for strep throat.
that’s a good way To give rise to a resistant form of that bacteria that then isn’t going to respond to those antibiotics if that’s actually what you have. I agree. And you mentioned culture insensitivity. I like that you brought that up. Not even just for strep but in general, if you keep going back, sometimes people will just say, oh you have a urinary tract infection but they won’t determine which antibiotics will be effective against the organism causing your particular infection so that’s where the culture insensitivity comes in. So you may wanna ask them, are you checking for the sensitivity. If I keep getting this, I keep getting these symptoms to make sure you’re treating it adequately, whatever the infection may be if it’s a bacterial infection.
