Swollen Lymph Nodes | Auburn Medical Group

November 5, 2019

Welcome to another Ask Dr. Vaughan on YouTube and on Periscope live. We have two audiences here going on two different cameras at the same time the audience on YouTube we are talking about Lymph nodes, swollen Lymph nodes and why they get swollen and what to do about them oftentimes people will feel in their neck a lump and get concerned because lumps go along with bad things and tumors and so you want to make sure that it’s not a cancer, well swollen Lymph nodes are actually a very common thing and people will get them from something as small as just an infection on the skin like a pimple nearby that drains to that area or having an upper respiratory infection Swollen Lymph nodes are famous for going along with strep throat, but also along with mono, mononucleosis the kissing disease So these are things that we see in primary care quite often. A swollen Lymph gland is caused by inflammation. Inflammation occurs whenever there’s some kind of an injury to the body oftentimes we associate it with infection although not exclusively as we learned with inflamed sebaceous cysts that can enlarge and sometimes rupture and inflamed Lymph node you have the four cardinal signs of inflammation which are redness swelling pain and warmth. You get these four markers of inflammation Whenever there’s some kind of an injury or infection. In the lymph nodes it’s no different, and this is where you’re having white blood cells kill or attack some kind of offense now it may be nothing as is the case with a sebaceous cyst. I shouldn’t say actually nothing figuratively nothing Like when a sebaceous cyst ruptures in the skin and you have this material that the body views as a foreign invader even though it’s just sebaceous oil but, it’s not supposed to be inside of the skin and so the the body attacks it with white blood cells and they have these chemicals that come out and there’s also a certain type of white blood cell called phagocyte. phage or phago means eat and so it’s it engulfs whatever it’s trying to get rid of and it in essence digests it, breaks it apart, and when this is going on there’s increased blood flow which causes you to have more fluid which makes it larger, the blood is warm, makes it warm so you get your your warmth and your swelling both from that you also get the red color because of increased blood flow that’s what the redness and inflammation is from and this can happen in a lymph node and in fact it can happen so much so that you can you actually see the redness from the outside oftentimes you can’t, you just feel that’s that sore and there’s a lump there that wasn’t there before Well there was something there before there was a lymph node there before but now it’s enlarged and that’s why it draws attention to itself Enlarged lymph nodes in the setting of something going on like an infection in the skin or an upper respiratory infection That’s fairly normal. You may have enlargement in that lymph node that lasts for a long time. Some people do have these these lymph nodes that you can feel in their neck that just stay after a period of inflammation, and it’s from Fibrosis or a scarring type action that occurs, and then they they just stick around you always feel them even though they’re not inflamed, and they’re not enlarging and they’re not hard We get worried about hard enlarging Lymph nodes because that can be something bad like a lymphoma or Leukemia occurring and that needs to be checked out but the the ones that are tender in the setting of something that should be tender because you have something going on like an infection in the area Those you can give a few weeks to go away. Now I’m not going to tell anybody that this is medical advice that you should not get your swollen lymph glands checked out. Not at all. Far be it from the truth. I would want you to get it checked now somebody is writing in with a question about the words palpable and movable. Palpable means you can feel it Moveable means you kind of move your your fingers around and you can actually feel the lymph node moving under the skin. If it’s not free to move under the skin, if you feel like it is attached, that’s absolutely something to get evaluated immediately because that’s concerning for some kind of invasive growth. Now. I talked a little bit about Lymph nodes draining an area and that’s what happens. We have lymph nodes in the neck and they drain the Lymph areas are the Lymph channels that come from around the face and neck we also have lymph nodes in the axilla or armpit And these are famous in the setting of breast cancer because these are the lymph nodes where oftentimes there’ll be a lump that is from a spreading of a breast cancer, the breast on that side of the body to that axilla and those like axillary nodes are checked, and that’s actually part of a breast examination that a doctor does annually on female patients you know you also have some lymph nodes in the elbows that these as a primary care and former emergency physician I associate the lymph nodes around the elbow with cat scratch fever because generally people get cat scratches on the hands where else and the first thing that you’ll find is that in addition to them feeling sick is this sore swelling around the elbow and then they can drain even further to the lymph gland lymph nodes in the axilla You notice I messed up. I said lymph glands because oftentimes people are talking about swollen glands well It’s not actually glands like the salivary glands that get swollen with something like mumps, but rather lymph node. Now somebody was also asking, actually was Danielle, from Ypsilanti, Michigan who is asking can you get swollen lymph nodes in the groin and absolutely that’s another common location that we check for Lymph nodes is right in the inguinal region or the area where your thigh comes together Let’s see do we have our friend in the back Here are the lymph nodes. Can you see the lymph nodes on Francis? These green lines here represent lymph channels, lymph channels drain fluid from the body or help the body that has fluid that’s come out of the arteries and didn’t go back in the veins and just kind of sits there. It gets drained by these lymph channels which eventually go back into the circulation near the heart and these little green spots represent Lymph nodes in the groin area and you can have drainage of material to this area of the Lymph nodes in the groin if you have say infection in the leg or anywhere in the, I was going to say lower extremities but that’s what legs are You can also get them inside of the abdomen but those you can’t feel because they’re way deep inside and behind the internal organs. These are places that doctors check, surgeons check, when they’re operating on people with cancer to check for spread of the cancer that they’re operating on, of course, if the cancer has spread to the nearest Lymph node that means it goes up a grade Staging, I’m sorry I said grade. I should have said stage because grading is something different So you have stage ones through four cancer and when you have it going to lymph nodes then you’ve reached stage, it depends on the cancer with stage two or three so I hope that gives you a little bit understanding of what this whole thing of swollen Lymph nodes is about. If you guys have any questions you can go ahead and write them in the comments below on the video We want everybody on Periscope and on YouTube to follow us at the Auburn Medical Group Channel and send it to your friends and share it with your family, people who you want to get good accurate health and medical information to and of course you can always write in questions either through the Periscope the Twitter or the comments on the YouTube. The right side of my face was swollen on Monday. I went to the ER and they said infection. On Tuesday the other side swells up as well. I can't eat because it's painful to eat. It triggers saliva and it burns really bad. Both jaw area are swollen and down to my neck. ER doctors prescribe antibiotics. It's also difficult to speak. I don't have insurance so I can't go anywhere else besides ER.

I've a swollen lymph node in my right arm pit (felt like a soft tissue about the size of a small bean) since March 2017. Doctor gave me antibiotics but the swelling still there. Then I had an ultrasound and a mammogram done and the result showed no evidence of breast cancer. However the swollen lymph node hasn't gone away, I felt minor pain when I pressed the swollen lymph node with my hand. How long will this inflammation go away? it has been about 6 months already.

So i have something for you. I have seen 2 doctors so far, and both have no idea whats wrong. But my right arm pit is swollen, not hardened at all, and not painful. How ever, sometimes not always, i get this very painful red line going accross my skin, going down my arm to my right hand, which after this appears, i then get very small marks on my fingers or palm that are very very painful, and if i use a needle and pop it, puss comes out. I also have a prolonged cough, but doc said it was just allergy, so thats probably nothing to do with the right arm. And recently, the red line has come back, and now its 2 red lines, but only one goes all the way down my arm. Its causing kind of an acking pain this time. Also hurts to straighten my arm, i think it might be slightly swollen as well its hard to tell. But if you are interested in guessing what is wrong, or want to help me you can email me at [email protected] or find me threw messanger on facebook under "joshua chiodo". I do have a military back ground, and i was injured in 2012 due to a 500lb ied blast which broke my left arm, damaged my spin/back, and i have a piece of metal go into the top of my scalp, idk if any of that info will help you. But i have been out of the army for 5 years now, so i doubt that has anything to do with it. I also had a cat scan done of the lump, and i know it is not cancerious and there is no shrapenal. I do have photos and video i can share if needed. Please help, thank you.

Hi. I had my tonsils taken out in Feb 2017. It is now October an once again I am having some painful round swelling where that big red lymph is. (Under my jaw by my chin). I was just at the ER last month for a kindney stone, a sinus infection before that, so I really don't want to go again now. Is this something I can wait two weeks for my regular Dr to check?

had this happen before under my armpit and groin area of my body before. it was painful and they really swelled up bad but eventually shrunk back down, did notice a discharge from my pores at the lumps though but this was a long while back. it sometimes happens, I'd say see a doctor but unfortunate I don't have good health insurance. lucky in my case my body cleansed itself. children or the elderly maybe not so much.

I had an ulcer on my tongue. after biopsy i was told it was benign but it kept coming back until my dentist arranged another biopsy and it was squamous cell carcinoma. I had it surgically removed but a few months later a lump on my neck came up and I had a course of radiotherapy after 6 weeks the lump was smaller but still there. My oncologist has said wait another 4 weeks but if it does not go there is no other treatment. Does this mean I could die?

I have been extremely tired and having night sweats, an anxiety lately. Several years ago I had both testicles removed because of cancer, so I'm not worried about testicular cancer. I have not gotten a straight answer from any doctor's, should I be worried?

My issue started with with an ear infection & neck pain. Prescribed Amoxicillin, which did nothing; later prescribed Cefdinir (300 mg) & Diclofenac Potassium (50 mg) for relief of pain & inflammation. Every time I took Cefdinir, my neck would hurt MUCH worse, but I finished the prescription. 3 weeks later, I'm back in the doctors office & was tested for strep & the flu (run down feeling, nauseous, body aches, stomach cramps, headaches, diarrhea, etc.). Flu test results were negative (doctor disagreed with that result as I had the symptoms), but positive for strep. Prescribed Cefdinir again & after 2 doses, I stopped – I couldn't stand the swollen glands pain anymore. I have the swollen glands issue WITHOUT a prescription & yet, my doctor keeps telling me to take ALL of the medication in order to feel better, but it makes the pain even worse! I've been dealing with this since October, been to Urgent Care twice & to the doctors office twice – is there anything else that can be done? 12/31/17 @ 4:40P.

It's not a pain that won't let me sleep at night, but I feel constant dull 'something' in the left upper area. I am 33 and in Dec 2016 I did a mammogram and an ultra sou d of my breast and everything was normal. The blood test came normal. It's jan 2018 and this dull pain has been there for an year. I feel no lumps and no redness. I don't have any fevers etc. The pain sometimes travels to my back shoulder. Any recommendations what I should do or what it might be? I'm feeling very anxious and any help is appreciated. Also I've implants since 2013 so not sure it's related to some nerve pinching caused by the implant. Thank you!

It feels hard tho. I am wondering if it's even a lump from a node…it feels like it's even bigger inside my neck like there's more of 'the infection' I can actually feel it it's so swollen in there, especially if I turn my head.
I remember getting one under my armpit like a year or two ago and it didn't hurt nor did it feel hard. It also moved. It went away nicely…

Ive been having strong pain on my neck and chest, it started on 10/2017 till now, i went to E.R, due to strong pain, i almost slipped into a coma due to high white blood cell count, we did 35 blood withdraws each 3 tubes, we also did cat scan, x rays, urine samples, and fecal samples. Nothing, doctors were baffled, one reccomended we do an biopsi of the lynth node on the side of my neck, so we did. Also nothing consisten with foriegn proximeties, meaning i have nothing, i still have the pain, not when im still, but when im moving heavy things, reaching high or low, im a 27 year old truck driver and diesel mechanic with a cat, also no cat scratch fever. I used to bench 300 lbs, now i can only bench 90 lbs. Drastic loss in power due to pain. Anything else i can do to figure this out? It really hurts me and i wish not to worry my family due to im the only child living with my mom and wife, so i suck up the pain to be strong for them. I need medical help please. I still have the blood test's they did on me on file, Why are my lynth nodes still swollen, with pain?

This happend when I was going the stairs up to by two with a backpack. I was in a great health condition as I'm 34 and in shape do sport all the time. Now I have this pain for about 9 months and it used to pain when I was pushing that, but now I fele the pain more and randomly. I visited several doctors, blood test, urine test and finally MRI. That they could see the inflammation but they saw inflammation near my hips and backbone that concerned them about rheumatism. So want me to inject humira pen every two weeks. But I'm not sure if those are related. Would you please help me to figure out what is this as this happend yo me when I was going up the stairs and I think it could be because of an injury. Thank you so much.

7 months ago, I noticed one swollen lymph node in my groin area. I thought nothing of it. My doctor thought nothing of it. Come February I had 4 swollen lymph nodes. Around late March is when I got super sick, I could barely walk, I was having hot flashes, I couldn’t stand without almost passing out. That lasted for two week. Now it’s May, I have 9 swollen lymph nodes and one of them changed into a weird shape. Almost like a small sugar snap pea. None of them are crazy big, only a couple have grown and one changed shapes. I still feel ill, body aches constantly. I am only 20, so I shouldn’t be sick for this long. I have an appointment with an ENT tomorrow.

My 6 yr old son has about 7 swollen lymph nodes on the back of his neck and on the right side of his neck. The doc gave him antibiotics to help the suspected infection. Going to doctors tomorrow to get them checked out further. Hoping it’s nothing bad??

I’ve had a swollen lymph node for a couple months. I got it when I got a cold but it hasn’t gone away. I feel fine now so that’s why I’m concerned

Who else has a swollen tender lump on the armpit and is worried sick? I certainly am. All I can say is, see a doctor now! Don’t wait for it to disappear on its own, waited 1 month and that was precious time wasted. Glad that I saw a doctor yesterday and cannot wait for my appointment with a surgeon (a month’s wait tho) ? meanwhile doing my very best not to freak tf out

Thank you doc! I just consulted with my doctor yesterday and he said if I feel a sudden pain on the part of my testes while I still have a swollen lymph nodes, there's a chance that I will become infertile. Is that true?

Got lymp nodes under both jaws but bigger and painfull on the right side; big beans size.
Also i can feel them under my right ear; pea size.
I got lymph nodes under armpits, bigger on the right one.
I can feel them in groin, but they always been there and i never worried about.
Sometimes my right ear feel stuck and my nose feel congested.
My right lymph node under jaw get painfull when exposed to mold, dust or smoke.
ENT doctor sayed is because of Allergic rhinitis. They also found past EBV.
It's been 8 months with this condition and i had good and bad days but it never got away.
Doctors checked me, ultrasounds and questions to rule out lymphoma and they are not worried.
Tried many thing on my own and only olive leaf extract seems to ease my symptoms temporarely so far.

I found out I have glandular fever out I have three years ago when I have become very sick with cold, swollen tonsils, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes and so on. After two weeks I was back to normal, let's just say I recovered. Everything with me is fine but my lymph is still swollen till this day on the right side of my throat and the back of my neck right side. It is extremely visible if I bend or raise my neck but I don't get pain. I asked my doctor what should I do but the reply I have gotten was it's less than 1 inch I don't need to do anything and it's fine for me to live with it. Do you guys have any suggestion I fear the worst thinking it can be cancerous or am I just paranoid.

What about thin people? A lot of thin people say that they can feel the lymphs, especially in the groin.
