December 13, 2019

IT’S FLU SEASON- AND WITH THAT COMES SNEEZING, COUGHING, AND RUNNY NOSES –IT’S ESPECIALLY TOUGH FOR CHILDREN THIS TIME OF YEAR–BUT SOME AREA PRESCHOOLS ARE TAKING EXTRA STEPS TO KEEP KIDS HEALTHY DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. KCAU 9’S TASIA NEVILLES VISITED A PRESCHOOL AND SHARES WITH US HOW THEY’RE KEEPING THE FLU OUT THIS FLU SEASON THAT’S OUR TOP STORY…TASIA? TASIA: TIM- THIS YEAR’S FLU VACCINE HAS ALREADY REDUCED PEOPLE’S RISK OF CATCHING THE VIRUS GREATLY — THE FLU SHOT’S EFFECTIVENESS WAS BETWEEN 50 AND 70 PERCENT THIS YEAR AND THE REDUCTION WAS EVEN HIGHER FOR KIDS– BUT A DAY CARE I VISITED TODAY IS STILL TAKING EXTRA MEASURES HOPING TO LIMIT THE SPREAD OF THE FLU. ” *NA* COUG* IT’S THE SOUND OF THOUSANDS OF CONTAGIOUS GERMS BEING RELEASED IN TO THE AIR CHRISTINE GOULD – DIRECTOR “WHEN THEY SNEEZE OR COUGH WE SEND THEM TO WASH THEIR HANDS” *NAT OF WASHING HAND* EVERY DAY 50 CHILDREN AT KINDERCOTTAGE PRESCHOOL ARE USING THEIR HANDS TO LEARN AND PLAY — “THEY ARE HIGH ENERGY ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR AND THEY DO LIKE TO TOUCH AND DUMP THINGS OUT.” IT’S A GREAT WAY FOR CHILDREN TO EXPLORE BUT IT’S ALSO A WAY GERMS ARE PASSD AROUND *NAT KIDS PLAYIN* THAT’S WHY KINDERCOTTAGE IS CONSTANLTLY DISINFECTING*NA* AND WIPING DOWN TOYS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE “WE TRY TO DO IT ALL YEAR ROUND JUST FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE KIDS AS WELL AS US AS TEACHERS BECAUSE IT’S EASY FOR THEM TO SPREAD GERMS” IT’S AN EFFORT THAT’S APPRECIATED BY SOME PARENTS LIKE CHRISTINE GOULD WHO’S A MOTHER WITH TWO TEENAGE BOYS CHRISTINE GOULD “I THINK IT’S JUST A HEALTHY WAY OF LIVING AND IT’S PREVENTING EVERYBODY ELSE FROM GETTING SICK AOUND YOU.” AND EVEN WITH PREVENTATIVE HABITS, SOMETIMES A CLEAN ENVIORMENT CAN’T STOP ALL THE GERMS FROM SPREADING “THEY SOMETIMES BRING THINGS FROM OLDER SILBING THAT ARE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.” IT’S AT THIS TIME THE KINDERCOTTAGE PRESCHOOL IS URGING PARENTS TO THINK OF THE REST OF THE CHILDREN ‘WE ENCOUAGE PARENT TO KEEP THEM HOME IF THEY’RE RUNNING A TEMP OF IF THEY’RE NOT THEIR NORMAL SELVES.” TASIA: SO FAR, KIDS FROM THE AGES OF 6- MONTHS TO 17- YEARS-OLD HAD A 61 PERECENT EFFECTIVENESS WITH THIS YEAR’S FLU VACCINE, IT’S A REMINDER TO TAKE YOUR KIDS TO GET THE SHOT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY TASIA NEVILLES KCAU 9 NEWS TIM: GIVING NEW
