 Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for 67 years and in that time she has carried out thousands of royal engagements She has soldiered on and attended events even when she has been suffering from slight ailments This is how the Queen manages to carry out royal duties even when she is not feeling her best   While the Queen is in remarkably good shape for someone of 93, she seemed to be battling with a common cold as she delivered the Queen’s Speech in a hoarser voice than usual today  Colds are common at this time of year and the queen has dealt with far worse ailments when it comes to soldiering on  Most notably she did not wear the hefty Imperial State Crown she usually dons for the state opening of Parliament  The Imperial State Crown, which is made of more than 3,000 gemstones and weighing two pounds and 13 ounces, was instead carried through the House of Lords on a red and gold cushion and placed on a table alongside the Queen for the duration of her speech   READ MORE Kate Middleton Pakistan: Who’s caring for children while Kate away?  The heavy crown was clearly deemed too great a discomfort to impose on the hardworking queen on this occasion  While nothing could deter the queen from turning up today, she has taken short periods of time off for minor health procedures in the past The Queen’s ailments These include a cataract procedure in 2018 and a minor operation on her right knee in 2003  Following the successful cataract operation in 2018 the Queen demonstrated her hardy approach when she got back to work straight away   Rather than taking days off to recover the stoic royal donned sunglasses and got back to engagements without cancelling any at all  After she had a minor operation to remove torn cartilage from her knee in 2003 she was back to work again in a matter of weeks  Buckingham Palace released a statement at the time which said: “The Queen is expected to be fully active again within a few weeks  “Her Majesty will rest at Sandringham over the next two weeks and will then resume a limited programme of engagements until she has made a full recovery ”     READ MORE Why Kate Middleton will leave her children behind for Pakistan tour  The Queen’s knee is said to be troubling her again, however, the royal has been keeping on regardless  A Palace source said last year: “She was talking to friends at the Chelsea Flower Show and said her knees were playing up  “But she is reluctant to have an op due to the time it would take to recover. She is incredibly brave  “People from her and Philip’s generation battle through problems and carry on. And Her Majesty doesn’t like to cause any fuss ”How does the Queen deal with constant public outings? The Queen’s unshakeable stoicism in the face of physical discomfort seems to stem from the promise she made on the day of her coronation  At her coronation, the Queen pledged her dedication to royal duty with the following words: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong ” She has stuck to her word since that day and continues to place her royal duty above all else   Trending  The Queen is said to keep a healthy lifestyle and loves spending time outdoors whenever she can  She also has a healthy diet and tends to avoid sugar and alcohol in access – she is reported to never drink more than three glasses of wine  However, according to one health professional, the Queen also has good genes to thank for her generally good health and longevity  Director of the Institute for Aging Research Dr Nir Barzilai, told the Spectator: “Genetic factors are more dominating [than lifestyle factors] at exceptional older ages  “In our [study of] centenarians, almost 50 per cent were obese or overweight, smokers, and not exercising even moderately  “That is why we study them — because their interaction with the environment is not exemplary and still they make it ”
