Pimple, Ingrown Hair, or Herpes?

August 28, 2019

Let’s say a painful bump shows up on
your groin. You might wonder if it’s a pimple or an ingrown hair or a herpes sore,
or some other peculiar growth. The best answer to this question comes from a
medical provider who can do an exam and run tests. What I’ll offer is a quick
rundown of the possibilities and some clues to tell the difference between them. [WHIP CRACKING, COUGH] Pimples: pores that get blocked by dead skin cells, sebum or oil, maybe some
bacteria. Ideally they go away on their own in a
few days and don’t cause you a lot of pain or stress. Pimples are more likely
to come around if you’ve been eating a lot of dairy or high glycemic foods such
as white bread and potatoes, but they’re also connected to puberty. More sebum is
excreted during puberty, so there’s more oil on your skin, collecting what’s
around it, and possibly trapping the mess in your pores. One thing you can do is
change your eating habits. Another is to improve your hygiene. An
many cases though, people get help from doctors because their pimples need more
attention than a behavior change. The doctor may prescribe creams or even
birth control pills to manage the pimples. What you need to know is that
pimples are not the only explanation for bumps on your groin. Ingrown hairs are
like pimples, but they’re a little bit more of a hassle because somewhere in
them, there’s a hair coiled up or growing sideways. Ask yourself if you’ve shaved
waxed, plucked, or Naired recently. Even though ingrown hairs can happen when
your pubes are natural and flowing, it’s more likely that a hair will grow in
toward the body if it’s growing back after being removed. If you want or need
help, there healthcare professionals who can assist you. Let them know that you
think you have an ingrown pubic hair, and they’ll guide you from there. If you’d
like to go the DIY route, I would suggest taking a pain reliever and/or doing some
deep breathing. It’s not recommended to lance an ingrown hair with a needle or
a safety pin as it’s hard to ensure your equipment is sterile, and doing so often
worsens the infection. But if you can easily grab that squirrelly pube with
some tweezers and reposition it so it’s going in the right direction, you should
be okay. What’s most common is the use of warm compresses, holding a clean warm
towel on the area for a while a few times a day. Herpes is a kind of sore
that you do not want to mess around with. Don’t poke it, don’t squeeze it. You might
know if your bump is a herpes sore because 1) You’ve had them before. They
tend to come back on the same part of the penis, scrotum, thighs, buttocks, around
the anus, labia, and/or vagina. 2) You came in contact with someone who has herpes,
either through oral, genital, or anal play. 3) Generally the first symptom is a
tingling or itchiness which you’re not going to scratch! And 4) The bump might not go away
before getting much worse. Here are your options! Go through the
cycle of an outbreak, which can last days or weeks. The sore or sores will enlarge,
then start weeping clear fluid. You may feel rundown and irritable like
you have a fever. Maybe some sensations of burning, definitely discomfort. But the
sores will crust over with a yellow scab, eventually fall off on their own, and
your groin will go back to normal. Another option is to go to your doctor
or a walk-in clinic now. Tell them you think you’re having a herpes outbreak
and ask for medication. If you don’t already know you have the virus herpes,
they’ll test you and then usually prescribe acyclovir or valcyclovir.
These are pills that don’t get rid of the sores but do cut the time you have
them in half. Lastly, there are over-the-counter medications like lysine
and Abreva. But again it’s not a cure, and for some people it makes the symptoms
worse. Whatever you choose, be gentle with yourself and please don’t infect others!
A few more explanations for your bumps might include: Razor burn – a skin
irritation from shaving. Skin tags – harmless little growths of skin. A bulge
in a blood vessel. Swollen or infected glands. Molluscum contagiosum – painless
tiny bumps caused by a virus. Warts or human papilloma virus, another infection
that’s easily transmitted from skin-to-skin contact.
Syphilis, a rare disease which is curable if you get help and deadly if you don’t.
And melanoma or skin cancer that can appear on and around your genitals.
Remember that if you want to know for sure, contact a medical provider.
Show them your mystery spot, ask them for tests if you don’t know whether or not
you have a sexually transmitted infection, and follow the treatment plan
if there is one. I really mean it when I say, “Stay curious!” Please subscribe to this channel and
share it with your friends.

interesting that you mentioned molluscum as a possibility! i know all about it from having it when i was younger because it was floating around a swimming pool. it can be spread sexually (or any skin to skin contact), swimming pools, hot tubs, towels, or even children's toys. treatment is no big deal and it goes away after a year or so left alone. other than that, it's pretty harmless. the treatment is often worse than the disease.

I really would like to know more about seminal leakage and how I could take steps to possibly addressing and curing that condition. Ever since I could masturbate, I did frequently and I feel like this condition has come as a result. I'm now approaching my thirties, I'm masturbating less, being healthy, etc. However I'm not seeing much results. I usually require a washcloth or something similar to masturbate or else my pre-ejaculate leaks out of my genitalia and runs all over. There's not much that I can find on the issue on the internet except for Indian herbal remedies. Do you know much about this issue?

TMI warning (but since this is sexplanation I think I should share my experience.

I've had an ingrown hair in my outer labia once. It's really annoying but it was not painful. One day it's starting to bruise and started to bother me. I asked my mother about it since I didn't know what the bump was at the time, she says a bump like this? the doctor won't do anything with it anyway so I should let it be. With frustration, I decided, against my higher brain function, to lance it. And Lanced it I did… it was not pretty. I squeezed out 3 inches-long hair and lots of blood. I didn't apply any wound dressing. I just wash it with soapy water like I normally do during showers.

I did not get infected afterwards. The wound healed on its own in just a few days.

Other than probability inference from exposure, and the other symptoms (leaking, progression, scabbing, etc), what are visual or tactile differences between these three? (E.g. in case one doesn't notice the other symptoms, or wants to assess a bump on the crotch of a casual partner who hasn't been tested for herpes [which most clinics refuse to test for, IME].)

  • Reply Raven Witch August 24, 2017 at 4:38 pm

it can also be MRSA. I contracted a MRSA infection from my partner's arm and the infection somehow made it to my inner thighs and groin area. MRSA can be dangerous and even fatal if left untreated. I was going onto septic shock when they finally figured out that the sores were. Be careful folks! If something doesn't feel right or your body is giving you clear signals that there is something wrong, don't ignore it.

  • Reply ojiverdeconfleco August 24, 2017 at 5:32 pm

It can also be a fungal infection! Same type as the ones you can get on your feet, but on your groin or upper thigh or wherever. Usually the skin is already scratched, like with a tiny shaving cut, and then it comes in contact with a contaminated thing (common in pools and gyms). These also itch and grow (in circles or "maps") and can easily go away with an antifungal cream or pill. Go to your doctor to tell the difference from herpes or others.

  • Reply Jcewazhere August 24, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Dr. Lindsey how would you make a sex selector for a video game?

I was thinking of a box or triangle with the corners labelled: Male, Female, Androgynous, and if box shaped Hermaphrodite. Maybe I shouldn't label them at all? Let people move the slider and find what suits them. As you slide the marker between them different characteristics show up, towards female breasts show up, towards male a crotch bulge and facial hair, then anywhere in between would be a mixing of the sexes.

The harder part would be NPC responses to the player. For a lot of it I can use nicknames, titles or gender neutral pronouns but eventually I'd have to have them respond correctly. You don't fix issues by avoiding them.

Another cause of painful, shitty groin bumps is hidradenitis suppurvia. I kept getting lumps on my inner thigh that hurt so much it was difficult to walk. I assumed it was either acne, a bad razor or an ingrown hair, so I stopped shaving and put acne cream on the spot religiously. Eventually the flare-up ended, but after it came back over and over again in about the same place, I assumed I had herpes because the symptoms made sense.

(How I could have contacted the virus without being sexually active was a great worry of mine. Due to living in Texas and getting abstinence-only education "if you have pre-martial sex you will get ALL of the STDs and God will kill a kitten" I had some pretty fucked up ideas–maybe it was from washing my underwear at a laundromat. Or shaking hands with someone and then masturbating later. But maybe it was just a punishment for having lustful/unclean thoughts in the first place. Point is, I was so scared and ashamed it was difficult for me to think rationally.)

After about eighteen months of this, I finally went to see a doctor and learned I had HS. It's chronic and there isn't a cure, but it was wonderful to know that it wasn't a weird Virgin Mary-esque STD or somehow my fault for being dirty and not taking care of myself. Best of all, it wasn't contagious! I still get flare-ups and they still suck, but I feel much better knowing what's happening and how to handle an outbreak. I hope that none of you struggle with this, but if you do, I want you to know that you aren't alone. Take care of yourselves, and don't be afraid to see a doctor (if you're able)!

I went camping one time and I started feeling like I had a really bad cold and noticed that I was getting sores on my labia. Immediately I thought I had herpes. I got tested for all kinds of viral and bacterial STDs and came back negative for all of them. Gynecologist told me it was some kind of bacterial infection not caused from sexual activity. A week of anti biotics and it was gone and I've never had another problem like it.

When I was a teenager, I was freaking out about the little bumps around the base of my dick. Then one day I came across a picture of the same spots, explaining they were sebaceous glands. If you're worried about small, painless bumpy things on your lips or genitals, google Fordyce's spots, that may lay some worries to rest.

I couldn't sleep at night because of the pain. I often had to have cold compresses between my legs to get relief. I made an appointment with my doctor and she knew right away by looking, she directed me to Total cure herbal foundation ( Totalcureherbalfoundation gmailcom )online to purchase the a herbal formula from them because this herbal formula has been the only way to get rid of this virus totally, without wasting anytime i contacted them and purchased,i had to use the herbal remedies as instructed which actually helped me get rid of this virus totally with serious side effect.

  • Reply Val Joy July 29, 2018 at 7:24 am

If you get hard pea size lumps that also act like a large pimple which come and go in the groin and perhaps show up under the breasts and/or in armpits it might be hidradenitis suppurativa (acne inversa). A dermatologist can diagnose and hopefully prescribe some antibiotics and ointment to help it clear up even though it is chronic.

I definitely get ingrown hairs on my face. If I let my hair grow out I never get anything but if I shave it I start getting bumps. Any ideas how to get rid of them or even better just keep them from coming?
