Narcos: Mexico Ending Explained: Rise of an Epidemic

December 17, 2019

Remember when we were wondering if Narcos
can survive and thrive without Pablo Escobar? Well, the answer was kinda no with Season
3 which, after Pablo’s story (spoilers, he eventually gets taken out by the DEA if
you didn’t already know,) focused instead on the Cali cartel. I feel like that season just came and went,
but Season 4, Narcos: Mexico is back to form. It’s an origins story of sorts, taking place
before Pablo’s rise in 1985 and chronicles the origins of the neverending war on drugs
and the rise of the cartels. We got Michael Pena as DEA agent Kiki Camerena
and bad guy, Diego Luna as drug lord Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo (I hope I’m pronouncing
that right). Let’s break this down. If you like this video subscribe, Pablo himself
will thank you. Now just like any other Narcos season, the
story here is based on true events and it’s actually pretty factual, so quick spoilers
but the good guys don’t win. Cause, there’s a still a war on drugs with
the Mexican cartels to this day, so, yeah. It’s a bit of bummer. Kiki moves from Cali to Guadalajara to track
the rise of the cartel and Felix, while Felix is trying to start and organize drug trafficking
in Mexico. So basically, Kiki sets the tone for how future
DEA agents and the U.S. government combats drug trafficking, like Javier Pena and Steve
Murphy and their fight against Pablo. While Felix sets the tone for the likes of
Pablo and the Cali cartel and their rise. And while we have our two leads, the main
theme and focus in Narcos: Mexico is instead on the failures of the Mexican and U.S. governments
and its leaders. Corruption runs very high and due to the leaders’
incompetence and corruption, we never get a happy ending, at all. The mistakes the leaders made which caused
this epidemic to rise, and remain a giant issue to this day. Narcos: Mexico is actually about battling
the institutions that caused this drug epidemic to happen, whether it was on purpose or not. With Felix, he was an ex-cop who saw an opportunity
to rise and take advantage of the Mexican government’s failures. He’s not some macho drug lord or anything
like that. He’s more reserved and tactical, thinking
five steps ahead of everyone else. He began with finding ways to move tons of
marijuana across the Mexican-U.S. border and eventually graduated to cocaine. Also, El Chapo makes an appearance too cause
why not? As you’d expect this season plays out with
the DEA and Kiki slowly getting to Felix while Felix destroys his operation due to his own
selfishness and desires to expand, like being introduced to certain groups in Columbia. Eventually Kiki gets kidnapped and tortured
for days for priceless information, but he’s not giving in and if you know the true story
he never does give in, to the bitter end. His kidnapping sparks the DEA and certain
Mexican police forces to come together to find him. Through their efforts to find Kiki, the U.S.
realizes just how corrupt and complicite the Mexican government is with the cartels and
their kidnapping of Kiki, and get Mexican agent Calderoni on the case as a result, someone
who can’t be bribed and he puts in work. Eventually, after getting to Felix’s right
hand man they find Kiki, who was unfortunately killed by Felix. Kiki’s death was a starting point for the
endless war on drugs. While it didn’t put on a stop to anything,
it made the DEA act very differently, to quit cooperating with the Mexican government and
take matters into their own hands. With justice for Kiki’s death on their mind,
the DEA and Calderoni eventually find Felix, who at this point is trying to flee because,
due to pressures from the U.S. media questioning just how corrupt the Mexican officials are,
loses protection from the Mexican government. Calderoni has his shotgun pointed at Felix
ready to end him but something weird happens. Felix is able to strike a deal with even Calderoni
as he tells him that the people employing Calderoni are corrupt and if they go down
with Felix, Calderoni won’t survive the fallout as well. And so, he lets Felix go and he once again
as the protection from the Mexican government, being able to continue to do as he pleases,
expanding his operations, with no real justice or repercussion for Kiki’s death. Like I said, this doesn’t have a happy ending. Like I previously mentioned, the DEA cooks
up a new plan to combat the cartel. Secret agents who don’t have to go through
any yellow tape, government officials, or anything like that at all. We see a handful of american agents gather
after crossing the border, with a list of Felix and the rest of the cartel leaders still
alive. Their mission is simple, to take them out
for good, setting up a second chapter of Narcos Mexico featuring an all-out war between the
secret forces of the DEA and the Cartel, without any rules. Before the credits roll we get one lost piece
of narration which once again highlights how this story doesn’t spell the end of anything. It almost feels as if the Mexican state is
beyond saving. This tale isn’t as exciting as Pablo’s
exploits obviously but it’s a hard lesson and story to learn about nonetheless. Even if Felix gets taken out eventually does
this mean the “good guys” will win? No, of course not. That’s where we have the other seasons of
Narcos. Felix with plenty of help, gave rise to an
almost unstoppable power. Let me know what you thought of this season
of Narcos.

So I had to watch Narcos Mexico again because at first I didn’t think it was as good as the others. After I did some research on Agent KiKi and knew more about the Mexican cartels story, the second time around it was way better. I think knowing that he dies, and that the first few seasons are just more exciting at first glance made me feel like it wasn’t as good. But watching again it’s remarkable, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Love the video. But the weakest part was having to see you. Your voice is good. Your look is not. Not being mean, just trying to help. You got a great voice. That should make your videos better without a visual of you.

  • Reply Dominik Wilson January 16, 2019 at 8:38 pm

To answer you last question, if Felix gets taken out, do the good guys win? NO. Because the cartel leaders are like roaches, you kill one and another one appears. We all know what happens eventually, El Chapo takes over and does even more with the Cartels even after the DEA grows bigger. It is actually kind of funny seeing El Chapo at an early age in this series working under Felix.

A few details left out. When they say this is the rise of the war on drugs, they don't just mean for the DEA. Eventually the cartels split apart and go to war with one another, tearing Mexico to pieces in the process.

Also, make no mistake. Kiki gave information away. The entire transcript from the tapes of his torture and interrogation were made public. You can find them online, in both Spanish and translated to English. He gave the identities and locations of several confidential informants and even 2 fellow DEA agents. We need to get away from this idea that a man is only a "hero" when he doesn't say anything. Damn near anyone would have talked in that situation. He was being tortured for days!

I actually liked Season 3 quite a bit. The four heads of the Cali cartel were each different and engaging in their own ways. Also, it was a nice change of pace from seasons 1 & 2, as 3 was more of an espionage series.

The “War On Drugs” has its roots in racism & socioeconomic divides, usually toward the lower class, to help engorge profiteers invested in the private prison system while inexorably demonizing the victims of drug abuse. This is often overlooked to instead present the “spectacle” of the drug war in undeniably terrific shows like “Narcos”: The bountifully rich traffickers, the women, the opulent homes, the guns, the all-night parties, the growing loot of cash. Yet these governments, including the United States, want a HUGE chunk of the profits, and what better way to justify it then by profiteering off of something that is outlawed and illegal. Read a bit more of another origin: why the war on drugs even began:

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nixon-drug-war-racist_us_56f16a0ae4b03a640a6bbda1

Face it: The supposed “good guys” will never win this “war” under current policies and severe restrictions. It’s meant to be an ongoing charade on the public.

Who are the good guys here? The GHW Bush CIA crowd that created the drug trade in the first place? It's the oil companies that wanted hemp made illegal. We hippies are being vindicated as science has to admit that cannabis cures cancer, and places where weed is legal, the deaths from opioid addiction goes down. So in the 70's when I was smoking Rafa's amazing sensimilla, and I was, if the DEA had left him alone and left us alone, he would have been a successful farmer and nothing more, and we would have had a cure for cancer a lot sooner. Kiki had an attitude about weed, and that pissed me off to no end as I watched him burn the fields. It's not Rafa's fault that it was illegal and that he had to create a smuggling route to get that good weed to me. It could have been a friendly business if the insane people in charge didn't have such an attitude about weed. Then coke happened, and that really is the devil. That could never have happened if weed was legal.

  • Reply Daniel Mafile'o February 25, 2019 at 11:56 pm

well, we latinos know how everything is going to play out in next season. Lots of murders, lots of corruption. Felix gets captured by Calderoni once again in 89 and put in prison, the cartels are divided, el Chapo becomes the big boss of sinaloa and starts a war with the Arellano brothers which has thousands killed. Calderoni is murdered in Texas. The war between cartels ends up in the murder or a cardinal, El Chapo is blamed. he is captured, escapes, he is captured again, escapes again, he is captured yet again, he escapes YET AGAIN! and then US government pressured the incompetent Mexican justice system to extradite el Chapo. and well. don't think Narcos Mexico would be getting much futher than that xD
