Melanoma on Your Nail?

August 26, 2019

– Everyone knows those
chain emails your forwarded, often by your good ole mom. Well, we do a segment where
we set the record straight, in, Stuff My Mom Forwards Me. This one’s going viral as we speak. It’s the picture with the caption, this is what Melanoma
looks like on a thumbnail. Guess what? It’s actually true. You can get Melanoma under your nail and everyone knows this hopefully by know, if you watch our show, Melanoma, the deadliest
form of skin cancer, but if you catch it early, Drew, – Yep. – Much more treatable. When you do think of Melanoma, we do think of moles that
get a lot of sunlight. But, actually Melanoma can
affect areas that little, or maybe even no exposure to the sun. Things like your fingernail,
the palms of your hands, even in your mouth. People have to realize that. The most important thing is if you see something
that doesn’t look right, see your doctor right away. Because, Melanoma of the nail is curable. You know, it’s interesting because this brown or black nail
streak that we showed can be the most common sign. – Exactly, and if you see that
early on, you can treat it. The prognosis for Melanoma
has to do with depth of how this thing grows. If you ignore something on your finger, that if you treat it early,
wouldn’t be that big a deal. If it goes to a certain depth the first treatment is
cutting the finger off. So, that in itself is a motivation, – And that’s why we do a full body check.
– Don’t ignore it Check your fingernails, toenails. More than 90% of Melanoma skin cancers are due to UV radiation from the sun. That’s why it’s so important
to protect yourself with a broad-spectrum sunscreen and cover up in the sun.

My friend has something like that on his thumb and he says he has it cause something feel on his finger it's been there for 8 years

I've had dark stripes on three of my toes for years. Doctors have never said anything about them. This would have been helpful to show what cancer looks like and what it doesn't look like as dark stripes on toes can be quite common.

  • Reply Vela VV September 21, 2016 at 7:29 pm

Ive had a stripe like that on a finger of my right hand……for 4 years doctors told me that it was a fungus and gave me tratement for that and never worked. Until a year ago the stripe started to get bigger with more stripes of different colors, a doctor started to take photographs to my finger, i was worry and went to different doctor and she made me a biopsy, that was not conclusive caus it was to tinny and later they cut almost all the lunar and yes it was melanoma in situ, thanks God at that moment. After that they have to cut my falange to remove all of it. And now i am waiting if the cancer was just there or spread to my body. I hope I have not that anymore in my body. Please know and check your skin. That 4 months have been the most horrible time of my entire life and it is in situ….. is a curable cancer….. Please you dont have to get pass fot this or more if you check your skin and protect it. (sorry for my english) Nice day!

I had a black stripe on my thumbnail for 7 to 8 years. I ignored it and it went away! I did keep an eye on it, though. It never invaded my cuticle or under the distal edge. Then it just slowly faded and disappeared! I'm assuming it was a mole under my nailbed and not melanoma.

Might also be melanonychia, I went to dermatologist yesterday to get my ring finger checked out and that's what he told me. If it the line doesn't run deep down past the nail bed I would not worry.

The sun the energy source responsible for all life causes skin cancer, and not the chemicals from sun screen? Interesting…..I wonder why the increase in sun screen use can directly be linked to the increase in skin cancer?

Well, crap. I've had a black line on my right thumb nail for awhile now. Not sure how long. Just noticed today that there is a small one on my left thumb. Another site said something about beta blockers and vitamin D Deficiency can cause this. I am on a beta blocker and I have vitamin D Deficiency. But, now I have to go the expense and pain to have this checked to make sure it isn't skin cancer? Jeez. I beat a different type of cancer twice many years ago and I so do not want to think that I might have another type; yet my great grandfather had skin cancer on his head. (Fisherman, bald, never wore hats, likely not genetic) Are we serious here. Could I lose both thumbs? How does that work in life? Ugh. P.S. The right main joint from thumb to hand has grown more painful. I have arthritis and thus never connected the two. Can they be connected?

  • Reply Charlie Harris November 21, 2018 at 7:17 pm

My senior year of highschool I developed a black line on my fore finger. It grows as my nail grows and is actually getting darker with time. People actually think I take a permanent marker and draw a line on my finger everyday….dumb.

After first watching this video, I was in a state of panic and in tears for days! There are so many different reasons for these lines on the nails (which I've realised after seeing a dermatologist and plastic surgeon.) Turns out mine is a benign glomus tumour. So please dont panic if you in a similar situation. Seek proper medical advice first! And DONT consult dr. Google!!!!
