– Everyone knows those
chain emails your forwarded, often by your good ole mom. Well, we do a segment where
we set the record straight, in, Stuff My Mom Forwards Me. This one’s going viral as we speak. It’s the picture with the caption, this is what Melanoma
looks like on a thumbnail. Guess what? It’s actually true. You can get Melanoma under your nail and everyone knows this hopefully by know, if you watch our show, Melanoma, the deadliest
form of skin cancer, but if you catch it early, Drew, – Yep. – Much more treatable. When you do think of Melanoma, we do think of moles that
get a lot of sunlight. But, actually Melanoma can
affect areas that little, or maybe even no exposure to the sun. Things like your fingernail,
the palms of your hands, even in your mouth. People have to realize that. The most important thing is if you see something
that doesn’t look right, see your doctor right away. Because, Melanoma of the nail is curable. You know, it’s interesting because this brown or black nail
streak that we showed can be the most common sign. – Exactly, and if you see that
early on, you can treat it. The prognosis for Melanoma
has to do with depth of how this thing grows. If you ignore something on your finger, that if you treat it early,
wouldn’t be that big a deal. If it goes to a certain depth the first treatment is
cutting the finger off. So, that in itself is a motivation, – And that’s why we do a full body check.
– Don’t ignore it Check your fingernails, toenails. More than 90% of Melanoma skin cancers are due to UV radiation from the sun. That’s why it’s so important
to protect yourself with a broad-spectrum sunscreen and cover up in the sun.
