Killer T Cell: The Cancer Assassin

Inside all of us lurks a serial killer, a
killer whose primary function is to kill and then kill again. These are cytotoxic
T cells a specialised member of our white blood cells. They patrol our bodies
identifying and destroying virally infected and cancer cells and they do so
with remarkable precision and efficiency. There are about five million T Cells and
a teaspoon of our blood engaged in the ferocious and unrelenting battle to keep
us healthy. These amorphous blobs move around
quite rapidly pushing out there leading edge and probing their environment as
they go. When a cytotoxic T cell finds a cancer
cell, membrane protrusions rapidly explore the surface of the cell, checking for the tell-tale signs of
cancer. They kill their targets using poisonous proteins visible here in red these cytotoxic granules move down
special pathways in the cell called microtubules to the interface
between the T Cell in the cancer cell. The T cell punctures the surface of the
cancer cell and delivers its deadly cytotoxins. This is very important in our
bodies where cells are packed together as it focuses the lethal hit on the
target and minimizes collateral damage to the neighbouring healthy cells. The fate of the cancer cell is sealed.
The T cell then moves on hungry to find another victim.

    It beggars the question though………If this system works so well as illustrated in this clip, then why do e get cancer in the first place? Also, what can we do to maintain our T-cells in optimal health?

    You are mixing two kind of cells. The called Cytotoxic T cells are the TCD8+ cells. The Natural Killer cell is another type of T cell. They both kill cells, but they are not the same.

    Plus, these T cells aren't as effective for killing cancer cells as they may seem from what is said in the video. Cancer cells have adaptation methods and many T cells don't even recognise cancer cells as enemies.

    Механизм иммунитета в случае обнаружения Т-киллером раковой клетки (на видео показаны синим) таков: мембранные "щупальца" лимфоцита проверяют подозрительную клетку.
    После такой идентификации, если клетка признается нездоровой, Т-киллер связывается с ней и вводит токсичные белки (показаны красным) в микротрубочки на ее поверхности.
    Впоследствии лимфоцит "прокалывает" эту поверхность, чем позволяет ядовитому содержимому уничтожить раковую клетку.

    …the video doesn't actually show cancer killed by T cell isn't it… it only show half of the killing without producing the result… what if T cell couldn't kill the cancer and got eaten by cancer? LOL

    All praises are for Allah(God) the soul creator.
    The immune killer cells are truly amazing. In my experiance when i eat homeo pills to initiate an immune response i can feel the killer cells flowing around my blood. The killer cells make a hand shake with every cell and if there is a body of cancerous cells then the killer cells create a circle around the tumour and then after some minutes if there is no normal response by the cancerous cells then the immune killer cells start closing in around the tumour from all corners and break it down untill there is nothing left. And the immune cells also fix and leave behind something in place of the cells they have cleared. Truly amazing. SubhanAllah.

    We dont need chemo to kill cancer we need to instead initiate our own immune killer cells. The big pharma wont tell you this..

    It looks gud on here but in reality t cells really don't do that much damage to cancer cells bcuz if they did no one would die from cancer and the would b no need for toxic chemotherapy that destroys the good cells along with the cancer and even then in most cases chemo still doesn't stop cancer from claiming lives

    Fantastic presentation! Killer T-cells needs to get learned from "messengers", so-called "Dendritic cells" (DC) to now what to kill, and the information is kept for a very long time even after a patient is cured. Ralph Steinmann was awarded Nobel Prize 2011 for explaining DC:s role for the immunesystem, and since then also the very first DC-vaccine, Provenge  was introduced on the market. 

    The method of producing Provenge and other DC-vaccines is very complicated and therefore expensive (around 40-45,000 usd/patient). Today there are some very promising research of other methods to "vaccinate" cancer patients.

    Very rarely "Killer T-Cells" activate by itself, probably just 1 times in 1000. But there are ways to "learn" these cells to specificly target cancer cells as Nobel Prize winner 2011 Robert Steinmann showed us by using dendritic cells. The rule of dendritic cells is as messengers and teachers.

    While immunotherapy (Infecting cancer cells so they can be targeted) is one of the promising fields for “truly aggressive” cancers 
    If our Immune cells targeted cancers every day – cancer cells wouldn’t stand a chance.
    Some questions about the cells used in the video
    Immune targeting (Self V’s Non-Self) 
    Were any of the cells modified to promote targeting?
    If not, as cancer cells are “Self” what do you suspect was being targeting on the cancer cell? 
    Could it be a common contamination in the cultured cancer cells used in the video, i.e. viral or mycoplasma?
    Could it be a component of the florescent stain used to label the cancer cells?

    what happens to the killer t cell when it doesn't function properly, lets say when a patient has AIDS or developed a form of cancer? Is it the cytotoxic granules that aren't working properly or is it the killer t cells ability to recognize a defective cell?

    Why do some people not survive by getting T-cells though as the last solution to cancer?? I know someone who got T-cells to destroy cancer in the later stage but it didn't work…
