Justin Mitchell, MD – Orthopedic Sports Medicine

March 8, 2020

I’m Justin Mitchell. I’m an orthopedic surgeon here at Gundersen specializing in sports medicine. Specifically as it relates to sports medicine,
I think Gundersen is uniquely positioned to take care of the patients in this region. We have a very highly integrated group of surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers and other non-surgical providers who can take care of almost all of the sports injuries that we encounter. We have providers that specialize in concussion
care, non-surgical musculoskeletal specialty care and also non-surgical physical therapeutic
care. And when need be we also have surgeons that
are here to help with those injuries as well. I would also want patients to know that just
because they are coming to visit a surgeon doesn’t necessarily mean they are going
to have surgery. We try to individualize what each patient
needs to get them back to their goals. Certainly there are times when non-surgery
options are the best options, and in fact I think that’s the case most of the time. But we do work as a team to make sure that
we get them to the end goal, and if that means surgery we want to make sure we’re providing
them with the best care possible. I think my favorite part of working here at
Gundersen and my favorite part of the job in general is seeing patients get back to
doing what they love to do. We have a lot of patients who are weekend
warriors and high school athletes and college athletes, but also just people who are in
pain from their day-to-day activities. And getting those people back to the things
that they love to do and things that they need to do is a really important part of our
job and it’s probably the most satisfying thing that we see on a day-to-day basis.
