I loved this video, but so glad I was eating when I was watching or I'd have gone all out to find nachos! I save all your videos to help me with my psychology degree and to pass along to friends and family if they happen to talk about one of the topics you cover. One of your videos actually helped me get diagnosed with Complex PTSD and GAD after a traumatic childhood so thank you. xx

This is awesome! So many people say in the comments that they are struggling w/ their mental health but a cultural stigma prevents them from getting the help they need. Would love to see a series on this, tackling different, unique, cultural stigmas around mental health!

I’m so glad you created this video. This show was the best and I enjoyed it even more when it came to mental health. I wish Netflix would of kept it! Really hope someone else picks up the show because it’s really brought to light a lot of things in the Hispanic community that is not openly talked about.

In Mexican culture you shouldn't be sad because there's worst things to get worried about than your thoughts. It sucks but that's the way it is.

  • Reply PRoseLegendary April 25, 2019 at 9:56 pm

Yay! I suggested looking at mental health in different cultures, great to see this video.
For me, my cultural background is Deaf culture, and there's a huge stigma with mental health, mostly because people aren't aware and educated about mental health. I've seen my Deaf parents and their friends struggle for years with anxiety, depression, psychosis etc but they don't have the words to describe how they feel besides "crazy" or "worried" etc, and they struggle to get access to therapy because of language issues. I see a lot of Deaf people being treated for chronic pain and health issues because that's how they'll present, rather than admitting (or even knowing how to articulate) that they're struggling with their mental health.

This was a wonderful video!….We need to have serious conversation in this country about mental health and we need to expand the resources for mental health so that everyone is provided with options to get the much needed help they need….We really need to make mental health as routine and as important as physical health…..Thank you!…..

I have taken medications and personally I too know they do not work. Not to nay say here honest I had so many side effects it wasn't nice Once I called the hospital due symptoms and the nurse told me to come there quickly? I didn't realize at the time I could have been having something like an epileptic fit? My tongue started to go backwards into my throat actually. I've read about them to date they are a problem for most people still and doctor's have been saying this needs to change. I really am sorry for this though no offense I hope. Alice Miller advocated people actually not taking them and other authors regarding psychology too. Saying that real support actually does help and yes the money needs to be there – and honestly in my opinion for support instead of drugs also . Not that I cannot say enough however getting off one I took required doctor supervision and again getting off them isn't nice . Some of us can't take them and other's can

I was gutted when One Day at a Time was cancelled. Watching the show was like watching my family and I was very lucky to get to watch it along my mum and grandma, which opened a lot of great conversations about the issues the show discusses. This is a big thing! (my family is quite open for being Cuban but we still don’t discuss stuff like mental health and sexuality as openly as I wish.)
My mum loves the show too and cried when I told her the show had been cancelled. It was a piece of home when she hasn’t been allowed back in the country for the last 8 years❤️

I found Ricky Gervais's series 'Afterlife' very good as well (it's about a suicidal husband who is grieving the loss of his wife, so a little trigger warning there) For me it was very very relatable, thought-provoking, real and hopeful. Can't wait for series 2.

Ok so I'm white and their is the same stigma in my family. Not only with my depression and bpd but also with my hypothyroidism. Their are people in my family who think I purposely get baker acted so I can go to the hospital and get a break from my responsibilities. 🙄 Someone seriously said that to my husband. People think I'm lazy because I have a hard time keeping up with the house.

Im certainly glad my condition doesnt allow me to recognize the stigmas that supposedly exist concerning mental health issues …btw …since no one is "normal" … shouldnt stigmas exist around people who do not choose to acknowledge their imperfections?

  • Reply Luke Ontiveros April 27, 2019 at 4:35 am

Hey, Kati. I'm recently diagnosed as Bipolar II, and I've had 4 Inpatient Hospitalizations for Suicidal Behavior and Attempts in under a year. I've recently found a med that is working (Lamictal 150mg) and I'm back to a normal (almost too quickly if that's a thing) that I didn't think existed for me. My current issue is untangling myself from my illness, and finding who I am in a healthy respect to my illness, as well as dealing with normal emotions without fear of relapsing into depression or hypomania. I can rationalize my normal feelings for once, and I'm just so not used to not needing to hyper-analyzing/rationalizing, that I'm at a loss as to what I should do. I don't need coping skills, my emotions aren't overwhelming… I just feel so lost in their normal. Any tips on how to manage normalcy after decades of childhood, teenage, adult trauma and depression/mania? I haven't seen anything talking about this aspect of recovery. It's like normal is supposed to be a long struggle to reach, and when we do it's supposed to come naturally to us with no problems. Thank you for your time, education, and support!

Hey Kati! Have you seen The Act on Hulu? It's the true story of Gypsy Rose and her mother Dee Dee Blanchard who had munchausen's by proxy and held her daughter 'medically captive', making her daughter feel that killing her mother was her only form of escape. If so, what's your opinion on the case? Is Munchausen's by proxy a common disorder? Does the person suffering from the disorder truly believe the one they are caring for is 'sick' or are they only creating the problems for attention?
