How to Empty Your Ostomy Bag

August 26, 2019

Hi, I’m Laura Cox with Shield HealthCare. I am the Ostomy Lifestyle Specialist. Today I’m going to be showing you different ways to empty your ostomy pouch. I generally empty my ileostomy bag when it’s about a third to a half full, and I do it about six to eight times a day but how many times you need to empty your ostomy bag depends on what type of ostomy you have and also what you eat and drink in a day. So the first thing that I do is I take some toilet paper and I place it in the bowl but also over
the side so hopefully the toilet paper will prevent some splashing. Next, there
are a couple different positions that you can choose to take to empty the
pouch. Some people like to stand. The advantages of this are that you don’t have to take your pants down, if you’re a man, you’re already in that position if
you need to go to the bathroom. People also sometimes kneel. This is something that maybe you don’t want to do in a public restroom if you find it kind of
gross. People do also sit the opposite way on the toilet and empty into the
bowl. And lastly, just normal sitting down and no matter what position you’re in,
emptying the ostomy pouch is the same. So it’s important to note that we’re
using water in substitute for any output or stool that would usually be in the pouch, so it’s more liquid-y than it usually would be. So what you want to
do is unroll the pouch, but I like to keep the outlet facing up first. When I know where I want to aim it I open the outlet up, aim into the bowl, empty the pouch.
There was very little splashing. Make sure that everything’s out. I then take some toilet paper – I generally just crumple it up put it inside the outlet and just get
everything clean. Get all the residue outside of the outlet of the pouch, pop
that in the toilet, smooth out any of the air – low profile as possible. Some people like to use a lubricating deodorant so the next time that we empty
our ostomy pouch it is easier. Aim your outlet up and you just put it in. Once
you’re done you throw this away and you just kind of work the lubricating deodorant up towards the top of your pouch so that it lubricates the whole inside of
the ostomy pouch. Then whether you have a clip or a self-fastening system you just
want to roll it back up, make sure that your ostomy pouch is secure and that it
won’t leak. I tuck it into my pants, flush the toilet and go about my day.

Hi Laura, I think your actual ileostomy pouch is very well concealed on the right side, isn't it? And the "prop" pouch is on the left (i.e. "wrong") side? If you had flipped the video horizontally (like a mirror image), the prop pouch would appear on the right side, like a typical ileostomy, but then the colostomates would be left out. 🙂

    ATTACHING POUCH:

    1. LBF Barrier spray around stoma
    2. Paste around stoma
    3. Paste around inside adhesive hole of pouch
    4. Pouch, tight fit; 15-25mm, push down hard around stoma, especially up underneath (lift bottom of pouch up), get ring flat on stomach!
    5. Elastic tape X2 around edge of pouch (use 2 extra top/bottom if extra activity) – Absolute key if going swimming.

This is a legitimate question and may sound stupid or tmi with you have the bag on does that mean you can’t take a bowl movement normally? Could you possibly do a video explaining what condition and how it effects your body? And btw thank you for the video.

hi Laura, can you tell me what happened to you, and why youre forced to use this bag?
and did they sew your rectum?
i know of a woman who the doctors did this to and i was wondering if this could ever be reversed or is it permanent.
i didn't want to ask her because a stranger was sitting close by and it would've been awkward.

im asking you because i see you have no problems being open. ive been doing research because im trying to see if this is her only option.

I have been wearing a pouch for ten years. During the first two years like many users I struggled with the not unusual, but highly embarrassing leaks, noise and smells associated with pouch wearing. Then I was introduced to colon irrigation (through my stoma) & have done so for 8 yrs. wow what a difference to my quality of life. Now I irrigate approx every 48 hrs and am free from all those embarrassments & hassle & no messy bags. Colon irrigation is not suitable for everyone however so talk to your specialist.

That way of emptying seems like it could get very messy if you dont aim it in the right direction or if you dont turn it down fast enough. The way i do it is undo the velcro patches, clamp the end of the bag between my index and middle finger so nothing can get through, open the end completely and then slowly widen the space between my fingers

I have been flushing my 2 piece convaTec Natura for 10 years and it
lasts from 5 to 10 days without issues. Never had a infection to my
stoma.I always take a plastic ketchup bottle with me on trips to town.
When the bag is half full I find a restroom and fill the bottle with
warm water and proceed to take care of business. 1/2 a bottle first,
shake the bag a bit and drain. Then fill the bag again leaving about an
inch of water to clean the end of the bag after closing. This has worked
and as far as it breaking the seal,I always press down on the area to
squeeze any water out . Hope this helps !

Use the back of your hand to open the water instead of your fingers.

6 to 8 times a day? fuck. Better not have an Ostomy living in Germany then…too few public bathrooms to live a normal live and being able to visit a toilet 8 times a day.

  • Reply asaf povo December 26, 2018 at 9:10 pm

The problem is the hard smell going out in the bathroom and nothing u do can't remove it… it's spread all over the house. … doing it in your home if u live with other ppl its just making there lifes very hard cuz of the bad smells. Unless there is solution for it?

I cannot empty my bag cos the poop is way too hard. Also my bags come sealed and cannot be reused.

  • Reply Isaic Levinstein May 2, 2019 at 8:47 am

Even If I never need a colostomy bag, I learned something useful. The tip about using toilet paper as a splash-guard is something i'll carry with me the rest of my life. Anyone who's used porter potties knows what I mean.

  • Reply Heather Olk June 11, 2019 at 5:36 pm

I kneel down on one leg, and empty through that method. In doing so, I don't spill whatsoever.
