How Does THE WALKING DEAD Zombie Virus Work? (Because Science w/ Kyle Hill)

December 30, 2019

In movies and TV, pandemics are pretty scary
things. That’s because, they are. The only way to make them scarier… Zombies. Now The Walking Dead is arguably the most
popular zombie story of our generation. Most of the story is centered around infection
and how people get bit by zombies so I thought it’d be fun if we figured out… How the virus works. First let’s start with what we know. Well, from the end of Season 1 when they all
venture to the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, we know
that Rick and the gang figured out that Zombie Virus is indeed a virus and everybody has
it. No matter how you die, you come back. Unless your brain is destroyed. Now is there anything in the real-world that
even comes close to this? Well there are a number of parasites, that after infecting
their hosts they effectively mind-control them. In the popular video game The Last of
Us, there’s a genus of fungus called cordyceps which infects ants, mind controls them and
bursts forth from the backs of their heads to infect more unfortunate hosts. There’s even another parasite called toxoplasma
gondii that affects an estimated one third of the human population.
To complete its life cycle, it gets into the bodies of rats, mind controls them so that they’re
no longer fearful of the smell of cat urine, which makes them get eaten more often by cats.
The parasite then reproduces in the bodies of cats and eventually infects us. Now, is
that a form of mind control? I think it is. But knowing what we do from the real world,
The Walking Dead virus doesn’t exactly control a living host, and the chief concern is getting
bit by a zombie and getting infected. Now in reality, dying from a virus that you already
have doesn’t really make sense. When you already have a virus but it’s not affecting
you, that’s called a reservoir. For example, we think that bats are a reservoir
for the deadly Ebola virus. That means that Ebola is definitely coursing through their
veins, but they don’t die from it. Similarly, it’d be odd if getting bit by a zombie that
has the zombie virus would kill you with that virus if everyone already had it. So if all of humanity is already a reservoir
for the virus in The Walking Dead, it has to be something else that makes the bite so
deadly. I think it has something to do with the bacteria in their mouths. In a world where nothing works, it would be
nearly impossible to get anything like proper medical care–bandages, antibiotics, medications–even if you had your own octogenarian veterinarian on hand. So what in real life kills with a
dirty mouth? Well, famously, the giant lizard called komodo
dragons have enough bacteria in their—wait, wait a second, that’s not quite right. New
research has actually come out showing that komodo dragons do kill with venom found in
the glands of their mouth. So we’re gonna have to think of something a little bit different
for that. How about, natural disaster victims? Unfortunately we know when we pick up dead
bodies from natural disasters that they can harbor sometimes deadly bacteria and viruses
like tuberculosis and even Ebola. If we consider a dead and decaying body to have some of that
bacteria and virus in their mouth, it stands to reason that if you got chomped on in the
arm or the neck and it went straight to your bloodstream that would almost be a death sentence.
Sorry about that leg, Hershel. So, what do we know? Well although there are
real world parasites that zombify their hosts, this isn’t quite what The Walking Dead had
in mind when it created its own zombie virus. That’s not quite how viruses work. However,
we can guess at what really kills you in The Walking Dead: and it seems to be a dead, diseased,
decaying mouth chomping down on you, and not having access to the right medical care or
supplies to treat it. Why? Because Science. Eughhh brains agghhh!

It's not the mouth because blood gets in people's mouths on the show so I'm thinking it has to be the teeth another virus that infects the bones so there is two virus's in the walking dead I'm guessing

Viruses work by infecting and inhabiting cells to use to act out their functions. Since the virus was shown to go to the brain, it's possible that it functions by hijacking nervous tissue and behaving as a colony to manipulate the cadaver of its host. If everyone has a reservoir of the virus, that means that it has their entire lifespan to infiltrate the cells of their nervous system, where it could sit dormant until all of those pesky extra functions of a living body cease interfering at the time of death, at which point it can jumpstart the nervous system and use it for its own ends. Viruses don't necessarily destroy the cells they infect, so it's theoretically plausible for a virus to inhabit and manipulate the cells of the nervous system. That's just my theory though, feel free to correct me if you know more about how viruses work than me, I freely admit I'm no expert.

The virus in the walking dead is like an op bone cancer, cause when a zombie bites Its not the bacteria that turns them it's the bone (teeth) cause if I was the bacteria then when the blood of the zombies goes into the mouths of survivors it should make them turn but it doesn't.

my theory is that the virus uses the lysogenic cycle, the virus becomes part of the dna and has very specific coding, separating from the host's dna and taking over when the host dies or that causes infected cells to start replicating the virus when certain conditions are met.

Supposedly Fear of the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erikson has confirmed a junkie named Gloria as "patient zero" for the outbreak. I wish they would elaborate. Was she the original host for the virus, or just the first to resurrect? If she was the virus origin, how did it spread across the world? Was she only patient zero in the US? She only came back after an OD, so how long was she running around with the virus, and was it spread by contact? Air? These questions, man.

in the Marvel zombie stories, the virus cant survive in an oxygen rich environment, and so buries itself in the bone marrow, and creates a secondary nervous system to take control of the host. It's also theorized that the virus is sentient and the zombies are just the delivery system. Not sure how that applies to either the walking dead or science, but just me being kinda a geek.

the virus that the living people are carrying is activated by the cadaverine present in the bite of the walking dead. this is also why even if you die from some other cause you still rise, the cadaverine your body produces as it begins to rot activates the dormant virus inside the host body.
of course for show buzz everything happens on a flexible time scale because drama….

Actually I would like an explanation of how zombies and vampires are able to even move, much less anything else. Since they do not breathe and they have no heart beat, there is no oxygen for respiration, no circulation to carry nutrients or oxygen to cells. Even anaerobic respiration requires carbon dioxide and sugars. Even when they eat, digestion could only be done by intestinal bacteria but again, no circulation to carry nutrients.

i think its more of a chemical that activates the dormant virus in your bloodstream. so either death or this chemical activates the virus. more than likely its the slow heart rate that starts the activation. that would signal a virus so spring to life from dominance and there are some chemicals that can slow a human heart thus tricking the virus into thinking the human host is dieing. But i dont actually know. i never read the comics, i just watched the show

I think it's all one virus. I think the way it works, is that the virus in living humans is dormant and only activates on death. I think the one in the zombies is active, and the active virus cells get in your blood stream from their blood or saliva, and take activate / consume and replace the dormant virus in living humans.

In "Fear the Walking Dead", we learn from Liza that antibiotics don't work after infection by bite, so the bite may be transferring a different serotype of the same virus rather than a different pathogen altogether.

My theory: the airborne virus infects hosts and replicates, remaining asymptomatic until after the host dies. After death, cellular respiration continues causing CO2 buildup and lower pH.

Transcription of latent sections of the viral genome begins once the cells are sufficiently acidic. This begins to build a new metabolism based on fermentation rather than respiration.

When a person gets bit by a walker, their bloodstream is exposed to cells infected with the fully functional strain. As it replicates, the live virus corrupts cellular respiration in favor of fermentation, yielding potent toxins, that ultimately cause death.

Unless someone died of something like ebola and is oozing bodily fluids everywhere, dead bodies aren't particularly dangerous, and even then, the decay bacteria crowd out things like viruses pretty quickly, and most viruses don't last long outside the body. What causes issues in natural disasters is fecal matter bacteria, from both the living and the dead, and untreated sewage escaping treatment plants.

Aside from some really specific diseases, morticians only even need gloves when embalming… because they are draining bodily fluids and because embalming fluid is toxic.

I wouldn't want to hug the corpse of someone who died of an epidemic or bloodborne disease, but I wouldn't be particularly concerned about it being around, or about other bodies.

Also: if they have bacteria in their mouths, their mouths would be wholly rotted pretty quickly. Since they didn't rot, germ-laden bites is not possible… unless they aren't really dead.

"most of the story is centered around infection and how people get bit by zombies", what? lol, apart from the first season(which maybe is when this was filmed) the walking dead story straight up abandoned any attempt to figure out a way to cure future generations, or stop the virus, or spread the information to all living humans. instead the story turned into the survival at all costs story of a small group of characters. To me, it was infuriating that the story took that turn. It would've been far more interesting to watch a group of people try to save humanity and fight back the dead, making a story of live over death. Instead it's just survival at all costs, lots of grunting and yelling.

This makes no sense…for one Jenner was not sure what it was as he explained to Andrea for 2 you are basing the disease as if it all went to hell after everything else did but we had access to extreme medical care when it all broke out…The theory mainly accepted is we are all in infected somehow and when we are bit it activated the sleeping virus or whatever it is in our bodies or it activates after it kills us just as if we when we die it activates…despite what research was done as everything went to hell we were not able to fully combat it before it got so out of control it took out everything like Jenner explained when he said "It was the French and how they thought they were close to a cure but they ran out of juice no power grid and it all shut down as it was happening there at Zone 5 of the CDC…So yea this theory video was not thought through very well…Just my opinion though.

I'm several year too late but I just wanted to point out Peter Clines EX series. Through the series they continue to study the virus and determine that it isn't the EX or Zombie virus that kills, it's the bacteria in the mouth of the zombie that is fatal. Also he explains the reason it spreads so fast is because zombie A kills someone with bacteria J,K and L then Zombie B has F,G and H but now also has J,K and L and gives all six to the next person they bite, and the infections grow exponentially with every bite making the bitten die and therefore reanimate faster. Love this series and am almost caught up with them all, good work!

  • Reply Zachary Hobbs March 26, 2018 at 9:22 pm

I think the walking dead scientifically has to do a lot with Cannibalism and the human brain. When we do not eat food our body starts to basically eat itself. Sooner or later our brain starts to shut down because the body is using it for nutrients. Parts of the brain that distinguishes between "Friend and Food" Become blurred and you basically go into savage animal mode. This has happened before to people who have been stranded without food in barren places.

  • Reply Reagan Friedrice March 31, 2018 at 11:28 am

What could be happening is that a random strain of this reservoir virus inside all of us mutated, to create strain X (we'll call it that for clarity). But it only mutated in one person, and that person became the first zombie. the Strain X acts as the parasites do, only they want to continually have a host to reproduce within, so they drive the host to search out "food", or humans. but this strain X actually manages to awaken the dormant or reservoir strain within all of us, mutating them to become strain X.

Raises hand I think you were on the right track with the Cordyceps! The idea of the virus being the dormant component and a life-form like a bacterium doing the killing is possible…but the reverse could also be true. Here's a thought: how about a fungal/viral symbiotic relationship. The fungal spores lie dormant in all of us (a recent development, which is why the apocalypse is "now") until a person is killed by the virus. The fungus then rapidly develops and animates the body. Note, that in TWD, you don't have to be bitten to get sick! The virus spread like a mega-flu in Fear. That implies that biting is only one vector. The fungal hypothesis explains one big mystery: why the Walkers don't fully decompose! Only a eukaryotic organism would be complex enough to keep a dead body physically intact for so long. If the activated fungus/host combo is partially autotrophic as well, that explains why Walkers are more active at night and also why they need to supplement this with meat from animals. They also need to eat meat for the protein; you need protein to make the capsid of a virus, and the active fungus will be making a lot of those! Any thoughts anyone?

  • Reply Daniele April 28, 2018 at 11:32 pm

Wrong, it’s not the virus killing you but the sympthoms: just suppose the virus infects and replicates without having another direct effect (except when you die), the body reacts to it anyway because the infected cells expose the unnecessary material on the surface and the antibody cells react to it. What comes later is fever etc etc.. but thinking about simpthoms alone is not enough. The modern medicine can hold almost all of this stuff unless the virus/bacteria that generates the disease is messing up with something we can’t directly see/something that doesn’t manifest on the outside (like “eating” on the brain and turning it off by blocking some sinapsys at a time???)
Now, even if this was possible.. after 10 minutes ( something like that) you have died, brain cells can’t be turned on because necrosis.. necrosis means it doesn’t work no matter what.. goodbye neurons, so, unless you have something generating electricity you have nothing and even if the virus could do it there is no way to coordinate it (hello epilectic zombies), you would have dead bodies rolling on the floor with no clue on what they are doing

  • Reply forshor1998 May 4, 2018 at 3:52 am

I'd suggest that the virus has a dormant and an active phase and it becomes active when it detects the host has died (theoretically possible), in the dormant phase it's undetectable (probably hiding in another cell) and in it's active phase it mind controls the host and implants DNA into certain cells or bacteria that re-purpose them to be deadly. Many viruses such as Ebola reprogram human cells to their own benefit so this isn't a sci-fi concept. Since the host is already dead it doesn't have to worry about the deadly re purposed cells killing the host, but it will kill upon bite, especially if these deadly cells/bacterium thrive in the mouth specifically. It'd be pretty hard to make but certainly possible, why the host doesn't decay or starve however is a mystery since it moves a lot without eating much.

Let's say the virus infects the bacteria in the mouth. However, it doesn't kill it, but marks it so the immune system in the bitten person does not attack it. This would be simular to how HIV infects white blood cells. The virus infects the white blood cells in the people. The white blood cells are told to ignore the bacteria in the bite. So that infection kills the person quickly. This would explain why a bite kills.

Perhaps the virus could have a passive state (That infects all humans. ) and active state, but upon death of the host some electro chemical impulse activates it and reanimates the corpse. And if bitten by a reanimated corpse it introduces active state virus into your system that has a cascading effect on the passive, dormant virus in your system, activating it, then taking over the brain as it kills the body.

The real virus CWD or Chronic Wasting Disease that infects deer and makes them zombie like, very aggressive for a short period of time before finally dying, could cause similar effects in a human if a vector between human and deer allowed the virus to transfer from deer to human was found by the CWD virus.

Just imagine humans infected with CWD, grayed out eyes and being very very aggressive started roaming around and spreading the disease by biting or scratching other humans.

Actually in TWD it is not known if the disease is a Virus, a Bacteria or even a Fungal infection.

By the by, that 33% of housecats with toxoplasma gondii infecting humans has been associated with humans getting mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Feel free to investigate.

What if Vampirism is a viruse and how it works like in 30 days of night, Passage, Van helsing, or like in Underworld, or like the afflicted from American horror Story

Yes but they turn to zombies when they get bit and die and you mentioned that they don't carry the zombie virus in their mouths so if the zombie carried a tuberculosis virus etc the person would die without becoming a zombie and how did the infection spread if the zombie virus isn't transmitted by bites (if you got in contact with bodily fluids that's the slower way of the spread)

There would have to be an active and inactive virus. The inactive virus is already in us but a secondary virus triggers the reanimation virus.
