Global One Health: Rift Valley fever virus | WUR

December 24, 2019

Rift Valley fever virus is a virus
that may cause epidemics… that will infect tens of thousands
of animals and humans. In the current outbreak in Africa,
many animals have been infected… and dozens of people
have been killed. Rift Valley fever virus Rift Valley fever virus is a virus that can be
transmitted via mosquitoes… that can cause severe epidemics
amongst ruminants and humans. Sheep are most susceptible
to the virus. Infection of newborn lambs
leads to deaths… and infection of pregnant animals
leads to abortion. Humans can be infected
via a mosquito bite… or via contact with animal tissue
during the butchering process. Infected humans will display
mild symptoms of the flu. A small percentage, however,
experiences complications… that are potentially fatal. Although the virus isn’t present
in the Netherlands… research by Wageningen University & Research has shown… that our mosquitoes can spread
this virus. Thus, it is important that we both
combat it in Africa… as well as prepare ourselves
for a introduction into the Netherlands. Wageningen Bioveterinary Research
was asked to make a vaccin… by the Ministry of Agriculture,
Nature and Food Quality. We managed to do this
after six years of research. The vaccin was effective
for sheep, cattle and goats. It was also safe to be used
when animals were pregnant. Currently they’re conducting studies
to register the vaccin in Europe. Once the vaccin becomes available,
we can combat outbreaks… that may happen in the future,
in both Africa and Europe. The massive impact this disease has,
will thus be lessened. By vaccinating animals we can stop it
from being transmitted to humans. I am Jeroen Kortekaas,
researcher at Wageningen University & Research.
