Gisborne’s P problem an ‘epidemic’ – former users call for support

February 7, 2020

It’s the first city in the world that sees the light
of a new day, but it also has a dark secret. Gisborne – famous for its sunshine
and surf – has a P problem. Police busts for ‘P’ related crimes
have reached record levels. There are fears the problem
could get worse. That’s because there’s no help
or services for ‘P’ users wanting to kick the habit. Irena Smith spoke to former users who are now trying to fight
the spread of the drug. Tricia Walsh knows
all about the downside to ‘P’. Her family helped her recover
from her addiction. She’s concerned however that there’s nowhere
for addicts to turn to receive help. Former gang member Tuta Ngarimu
works at Puhi Kaiti, a centre that helps
provide community support. He sees ‘P’ addicts every day. Community workers say
the situation is so bad, a quarter of the people who live in
Gisborne have been affected by ‘P’. Over the last few weeks, nearly 40 people have been charged
by Gisborne police for selling ‘P’ and marijuana. Tricia and Tuta hope that with
their insight into ‘P’ addiction, they’ll be able to find a cure. It’s a war the community
is prepared to kick start. Irena Smith, Te Karere.

I think marijuana should be totally legalised because that is the far better alternative.
