Epidemic | Novel Coronavirus in China 2020

February 26, 2020

Hi everyone, this is Angus. It’s been a long time. In the past one month, we are flooded with
news of the novel coronavirus. It’s quite scary. Today, let me tell you what’s the situation
here in China and my personal feeling. The story started from my Chinese New Year holiday. On 16th, Jan, my wife and I set off our driving
trip at 7 am from Yiwu city, Zhejiang province all the way back to our hometown in Shaanxi
province. Here is our route on the map. It’s a long trip around 1,500km. Back then, the coronavirus was not gone wild. And many news was not published yet. We were planning to stop by one friend in
Wuhan city, Hubei province and stay one night there. So, we could arrive home afternoon the next
day. Ideally, we could arrive Wuhan city at 5pm the same day. But the traffic on the road was terrible. It took us over 10 hours driving out from
Zhejiang province. When we arrived at Wuhan, it’s almost 1
o’clock in the morning. Obviously, It’s too late to visit my friend and we
didn’t want to find a hotel at that time. We decided to take a rest in the car at the
highway service station. We are so lucky that we never entered into
the city. I’m not saying that entering into the city
would cause us infected, but we would face a lot of issues later, for example, at least
14 days quarantine, then we could not stay with our family for the new year holiday. Once we were back home, we read several news
about the virus and realized that this is going to be serious. We shared the news to our families, relatives
and friends in the first time. Hope that they could pay attention to it. However, that’s not the case. My families didn’t take it seriously at
all. Even the local government did not realize
the problem. And I was quite worried when I saw many cars
coming back from Hubei province to my hometown. I tried to stay away from them. Later I got to know that over 300 people back
from Hubei province to my home village. So, a whole week at home, I was telling my
families all the information about the epidemic. Until the Chinese New Year eve, the local
government published some policies to stop us going out or gathering together for the
holiday. Then, people started realizing the problem
and our new year holiday was totally ruined. We couldn’t go anywhere and visit any relatives. Louise and I sensed that the epidemic could
not be contained soon. We made another decision, go back to Zhejiang
province ASAP as many provinces, cities started lockdown, people can only leave the city but
cannot enter. If we left hometown 2 days later, we would
be stuck on the highway. Or we have to wait until the epidemic is controlled. So, stayed at home for a very short time, we went back to Yiwu isolating ourselves for 14 days. You may wonder why we were isolating ourselves? Because after a long driving trip, Louise
started coughing and I felt uncomfortable about my throat as well. Those are symptoms of the coronavirus. Luckily, we are fine. And I recently have been chatting with a lot
of foreign friends. Thanks for all your best wishes and support. At the same time, many friends fear the disease
and worry about the future business with China. Some are afraid of sourcing from China, even
receiving products from China. That’s understandable. We hope to get through this soon. For the disease, there are a lot of information
that we are not sure. If you want to know more about the virus,
you can visit the official website of the World Health Organization or the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. It has all the official news and Q&A about
the virus. We can check some of them right now. For example, how does the virus spread? The new coronavirus seems to be spreading
from person-to-person. How to protect yourself? There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus
disease 2019. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid
being exposed to this virus. If no any confirmed disgnosis or suspects
in your area, you are safe. If it spreads to your place, there are some
more preventive actions. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue;
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces; wash hands frequently; That’s actually what I have been doing in the past month. Am I at risk for COVID-19 from a package or
products shipping from China? There is still a lot that is unknown about
the newly emerged COVID-19 and how it spreads. In general, because of poor survivability
of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products
or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be
spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support
transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of
COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods. And there are many more information on the
website, you can check them all later. Let’s have a look at some numbers. Right now, we are at the page of the real-time
status of the epidemic. It has both the national and the global data. You can find the link in the video description. Until today, there are over 51,400 existing
confirmed diagnosis; 4,148 existing suspects; existing severe 10,968; 77,000 cumulative
diagnosis; cumulative deaths 2,445; and 23,122 were cured. And here is a glance of the epidemic map,
statistically, Hubei is the outbreak and the only severe area. Guangdong province, Zhejiang province and
Henan province has over 1,200 cumulative diagnosis respectively, but over half of them were cured. And the confirmed number seems like getting
controlled. Obviously, that’s a good sign. And that’s also why Zhejiang province prepared
to recover the business step by step. For example, Yiwu is a county level city in
Zhejiang province. The international wholesale markets in Yiwu
city are opened one by one, but whoever wants to visit the market need to apply for permission
and go through a health check. I know the opening policy may sound irresponsible
to you as the epidemic is not yet contained and defeated. The thing is that in the last one month, China
has been making huge efforts in fighting against the virus. And I believe that the government already
has a system to fight it, even for a long term. Here are some facts, soon after the outbreak
of the virus in Wuhan, the city of 9 million people was lockdown to control the spreading
of the virus; thousands of doctors and nurses from all over China volunteered to fight the
virus at the epidemic front; 2 hospitals over 100,000 square meters were built and put into
use in only half a month; All the facts have shown the world the real speed of China. And we all know that not only China had a
tough beginning of 2020, but also many other countries around the world suffered something
somehow. So, here comes my main point for this video. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, let’s
have faith, and stay safe in 2020. The world would be healed, and tomorrow will
be better. I’m Angus, Thanks for watching.
