Does Apple Cider Vinegar Work For Weight Loss? (The Truth)

November 5, 2019

So if you’re into nutrition and fitness
and health, apple cider vinegar is something you’re gonna hear about. Now
you’ll hear about this a lot if you’re into blogs and you’re into YouTube
channels, you’ll hear about different kind of herbs and stuff that are magic for
weight loss and “take the supplement from this tree and you’ll be super healthy” –
there’s just lots of that stuff out there. Apple cider vinegar is something I
actually think has a lot of health benefits and there’s quite a lot of
evidence to back that up, so in today’s video I just want to go over the
question of whether apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight and if not or
if yes why and furthermore what are the other benefits of it and is it
something worth buying or…what’s the deal with apple cider vinegar, that’s
today’s video. So apple cider vinegar has been used for thousands of years
actually. A lot of ancient civilisations really saw it as a miracle
liquid. So basically how it’s made is that apples that cut up (a lot of them),
it’s combined with yeast and that kind of ferments and then good bacteria
also added to it and that creates something called acetic acid. Now, first
it’s important to understand that acetic acid is probably the main compound,
chemical in apple cider vinegar which is going to give you a lot of the
benefits that I’m about to speak about and many generic brands of apple cider
vinegar don’t have acetic acid so it’s acetic acid which you’ll find with
organic or natural or whatever brands of apple cider vinegar that generally have
acetic acid. So be sure to get the one with acetic acid. So acidic acid will
kind of give it that murky kind of look to it and it will look just very
different to the normal apple cider which is just a plain color so the
acetic acid kind of makes it cloudy and murky and about 5-6% of
the apple cider is that acetic acid and it gives it that very sour and
pungent kind of smell and odor which some people like some people don’t like
personally I reckon it’s a nice smell. But anyway let’s get to these benefits.
So in terms of weight loss there are actually some pretty significant
benefits. So, you know, you’re gonna see many
sources, some sources will tell you that there’s no benefits to weight loss and I
mean yeah it’s true like if you drink it you’re not just gonna lose weight
because you drink it, right? But what the acetic acid and apple cider in general
tend to do is that it decreases blood sugar, it decreases your insulin levels
(much like fasting or the ketogenic diet will do) and while that’s not required
for weight loss we know that the more insulin you have generally the more fat
you’re gonna have around your organs and your gut and which is why you’ll see
diabetics with huge bellies, right? Because the more insulin, the more cortisol you have, the more fat you’re gonna have around your gut. So it seems that
apple cider vinegar decreases your insulin levels and your blood glucose
and in rats even they’ve found that giving apple cider to them apple cider vinegar
to them helps them lose weight and it could be because of these effects and
it also increases your metabolic rate. There’s an enzyme called AMPK and this
increases when you consume apple cider vinegar and when this enzyme increases
your metabolic rate actually increases. So in some ways it actually increases
your metabolism. Again, the extent to which it does this may not be that
significant, so you shouldn’t rely on apple cider vinegar, you shouldn’t throw away your gym card and be like, screw it I’m never going to the gym again, let me put apple cider vinegar on top of this McDonald’s french fries because it
boosts my metabolism, don’t be an idiot. But it’s interesting to note nonetheless
because little things that boost your metabolism kind of add up, you know? You fast, you drink a bit of coffee, you eat some spicy food, you have some apple
cider vinegar and slowly all these things add up to perhaps a significant
amount which may be the difference that allows you to lose weight week to week. So that’s interesting. I remember living in my apartment like two years ago and I
took a shot of apple cider vinegar (because I was into the stuff way back
then as well). My flatmate just looked at me he’s like “what are you doing?”, I’m like,
“you don’t know about the health benefits of it?” So my point there is it might be
a bit eccentric, so instead of taking shots of it, you can get the amount you need just by sprinkling it on your salad or any other
food that kind of goes with this. You don’t need to take shots of it like me,
but that’s just the way I prefer to take it. Now another thing is that apple cider
vinegar is super good for your digestion, right? So along with controlling
your blood sugar, decreasing your insulin levels, perhaps helping with your
metabolism, decreasing appetite, it also helps with the
digestion of your food. So you can see that all these kind of variables that
are changing really are interlinked with how one manages their weight. Now there have been several studies where they’ve taken groups of people and have taken
controls and I’ve only given them like two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
per day and they’ve seen decreased weight circumference, decreased triglyceride
levels, decreased body fat percentage in general, so the benefits for such a
small amount have actually been quite profound! It’s interesting it really is
interesting and it’s gained a lot of popularity and although many people you
know the kind of like I’m not really sure about I think that the evidence is
kind of showing that it can be a great way to supplement your weight loss
routine. So, it’s not a scam, right? Apple cider vinegar is not a scam, it’s
not like the next health trend that you hear about that isn’t true but is just
being shared around, no, there’s some validity to it. Is it the
be-all end-all cure for obesity? Of course not, but is it worth trying if
you’re just looking for an edge or you’re looking to get through a plateau,
perhaps, you know? But don’t rely on it. Now, other important things that apple cider
vinegar does is it really helps with your digestion, right, it helps with your
gut bacteria out because of that good bacteria as it helps promote good gut
health which is super important for weight loss and just well-being in
general, how you think. We have neurons and we have serotonin
which is mainly produced in the gut, so how we treat our gut it’s important for
how we think and how we feel so that’s also a really good benefit. So the other
good thing about it along with helping your digestion is it kills harmful
bacteria, if it could prevent food poisoning if you have E. coli,
because it’s gonna kill that bacteria. That’s the reason I’m recommending this. I’m not the type of person to kind of make singular videos on certain herbs
and stuff like ginkgo biloba and this “herb” from China that does “this”,
because they all kind of have small potential health benefits, but apple
cider vinegar seems to be one that is really useful in so many different ways, you can clean things with it you can drink it, you can you put it on your
food, it’s antibacterial, there are so many uses for it I’d recommend just
having a bottle of organic apple cider vinegar in your home. So that’s it for
the video. The question for today is do you use apple cider vinegar, yes or no? Thanks for watching guys, as always and I will see you next time. If you’re new
here, this is The Stoic Body, we’re all about about health, we’re all about nutrition
and fitness and becoming the healthiest and wisest versions of ourselves. So
until next time see you later!✌️

I find ACV makes my stool really hard. I love the taste of it though.. The Romans mixed it with water and drank it on marches, it was called "posca", when it's ice cold it's really refreshing. Btw, is that cloudy thing you refer to not called "the mother"?

I'm convinced by its benefits but have been hesitant with trying it out. Most people I know who swears by this, recommend for me to drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. My tummy is pretty sensitive when I take in any acidic drink first thing in the morning.

Thank you for another informative video. How much should you drink in a shot and per day. I'm curious, how do you consume it?

  • Reply Pablo Insano October 12, 2017 at 5:35 pm

Hi. Thanks for this video. I'm hoping you may be able to help. I recently bought 5 litres of organic apple cider vinegar "with mother" from a company named Biona on Amazon UK. The liquid is extremly clear to look at. Does this mean it's a bad product with no mother? I've been drinking a couple of tablespoons with water and lemon juice each morning but wondering if I've been ripped off. Keep up the great work. Love your vids.

  • Reply krhenell October 12, 2017 at 10:42 pm

Thanks, Philip, appreciate the honesty and balance in your ongoing efforts to educate us in lifestyle improvement and customization. A clarifying detail: acetic acid is present in all vinegars and is perfectly clear. The murkiness in some is residual solids from bacteria (Acetobacter) and fruit that has not been filtered out.

Philip, I'm reporting back after ~2 weeks (sorry I didn't post on fb as I haven't been on it since January). These days I do 10mins of kb swings in the morning (15/15s work/rest intervals), and then at night I do 5×5's where I have a list of kettlebells and tabata-esque body weight exercises that I pick at random (reps are between 5 and 15 depending on the exercise). Anyway, I rarely finish the 5×5's within my allotted time of 15mins (I seem to run out of energy on the last set – my question is thus, can I take coconut oil with dinner (usually at 6pm), and secondly, can I take coconut oil in the morning before my first workout? I eat once a day (so I know the coconut oil will break my fast), but I feel like I am severely lacking energy for my main workout in the evening (I also want to lose body fat)

All vinegar is acetic acid, isnโ€™t the the mother in ACV what makes it special? Great content really enjoy your channel.

  • Reply Andrew Shaw October 17, 2017 at 4:22 am

Vinegar is an acetic acid solution. If the main thing in apple cider vinegar to benefit health is acetic acid, why not just buy cheap whote vinegar?
But I actually think you may be mistaken. I think it might be the mother which is indicated by the cloudy appearance. Mother is the bacteria colony which made the vinegar.

Philip, I have heard some claim that you should not store ACV in plastic jars because the plastic will leech into the ACV. Do you agree that this is the case?

I have a follow up question related to this. I purchased Braggs ACV but I had an idea to make using it easier. I have a glass jar with a screw on top that is a "pump lid" to squirt out the ACV. Since I add ACV to water throughout the day it is easier to squirt some into my glass of water instead of removing the cap each time. However the pump lid is plastic and contains a plastic "straw" that reaches the bottom of the glass jar. Do you think is it acceptable to store ACV in this glass jar with the plastic straw touching it?

In a similar vein, I would like to know your thoughts on Kombucha. I have started drinking it recently and feel better in so many ways. I started brewing it also. Here is a problem perhaps you can help with. I suddenly developed canker sores on gums and tongue. I assume it has something to do with the Kombucha. Is there a way I can mitigate this and continue to drink Kombucha. perhaps my home brew has wrong pH or something.

First time commenter but long time subscriber – thank you for your passion to health, fitness and wellness Philip! I use apple cider vinegar & while the taste is pretty average, I absolutely feel the benefits. Iโ€™m a boxer so keeping my weight in check whilst fuelling my body for extreme exercise demands is imperative & ACV helps me feel fortified & energetic. The first time I took it I was half asleep & threw back a port glass full of pure ACV which hit the back of my throat & scalded all-the-way-down taking my breath away whilst simultaneously giving me what I imagine as my best gremlin look (post feeding after midnight!). Have since found a kinder organic version & mix it with water now but I 100% adding this morning & night into your routine

I have been using ASV now for 5 years I swear by it. I take it 3 times a day and I use it for everything. I give it to my dog my cat also to my pet hamster, and thy all love me for it, when I wake up in the morning they all gather around me waiting for it. Itโ€™s like a drug itโ€™s a healthy one.

Also last week my car stopped working, so I poured a bottle of it in my engine guess what the engine started first time. But what really blew me away I didnโ€™t even turn the ignition key on so wow apple cider vinegar is the also fantastic for cars.

Also six months ago I was driving through the forest and I accidentally ran over a deer, I was so sad and the deer looked like it was dead, but luckily I remembered I had a bottle of apple cider vinegar in my glove box, and I quickly opened the bottle and poured it down the Deers throat, and low and behold after two minutes he was up and walking and actually came to me and licked my face for gratitude.

Also 2 weeks ago my goldfish died (Fred) he was three years old now this is A miracle. as soon as I put some ASV in his tank after 30 seconds he started swimming again much stronger and faster. I was so happy and also Fred he has now grown and got a lot bigger. So I would highly recommend apple cider vinegar.
