Coronavirus Epidemic Update 13: Li Wenliang, nCoV vs Influenza, Dip in Daily Cases, Spread to Canada

February 7, 2020

welcome to another MedCram corona virus
updates number of deaths has gone from 565 up to 638 that’s an increase over
day of 73 and that’s exactly what it was yesterday so it looks as though we’ve
got a linear increase here in the last couple of days I am very sad to say that
one of those deaths was dr. Lee wen Liang who was credited as one of the
original doctors who recognized that there was a outbreak and then succumbed
to the very infection that he was warning about and for those of us that
are in the healthcare industry doctors nurses respiratory therapists
all sorts of people who every day go to work to fight disease a comrade of ours
has fallen and it gives us pause to remember that this is not a numbers game
they’re real people with families behind every one of these numbers in terms of
the infected that’s wet from 28,000 274 to 31,000 440 interestingly yesterday
that number represented an increase of 3700 today only an increase of 30 166
could this possibly be where things are starting to level out I’m eternally
optimistic but I’m not sure so interestingly if you go to this website
called world meters dot info backslash coronavirus backslash you come to this
dashboard that we referenced a couple of days ago and shows here the number of
corona virus cases of course and the number of deaths and the number that’s
recovered and what you’ll see here is the total cases and if you notice very
carefully you’ll start to see that it looks as though it’s starting to layer
off but it may be difficult to actually assess that from the way this graph is
laid out so if you keep scrolling down you’ll see this linker that says more
case statistics if you click on that you can see here the corona virus cases and
there’s little bit more detail here’s the part that’s interesting if you look
at daily cases worldwide on the graph here are the bar graph you’ll start to
see here that February 6 for the second day in a row there seems to be
somewhat of a decrease at least there’s a decrease here on February 5th it may
be that the data hasn’t all come in yet for February 6th it’s unclear but that
is certainly something that is noteworthy and something to watch and
then there’s the growth factor which is basically taking the derivative or the
slope of that increase and that’s what we have here for the growth factor you
can see early on there was quite variable and then it’s been generally
speaking just above 1 in terms of growth and here again for the second day in a
row it seems if all the data is in and is correct it would seem to suggests
that the daily cases growth factor is finally for the first time here going
below 1 for two days in a row potentially and hopefully that’s gonna
lead us in the right direction and then again here we have the total change in
number it seems as though we were in the 29 mid-20s here in terms of change in
total number we’ve dipped below 20 down to 15 and now we’re down to 11% we can
only hope that that is true we’re gonna have a better understanding of what’s
going on here in the next couple days over the weekend which by the way as we
did last week we will take a break and we’ll start up at the beginning of next
week I want to put these numbers into perspective however right now in the
United States we have a flu epidemic I’m sure that’s globally as well about
19 million people have gotten the flu this year a hundred and eighty thousand
of them have been hospitalized here in the United States and believe it or not
10,000 of them have died this flu season 68 of those 10,000 were children you in terms of those people that are
recover to make a note of that yesterday the
total number officially that recovered was 1178 that’s gone up by about three
hundred and sixty nine to one thousand five hundred and forty seven and we’re
gonna see this number increasing a couple of weeks ago we were in the few
hundred and now things have taken off the thirty thousand so we gonna start to
see definitive things here one way or the other I will say though dr. Lee had
a kind of unusual course if you look into his history he was hospitalized on
one twelve twenty twenty of course by that point they had suspected along the
way that he may have had this virus and he was tested numerous times
it wasn’t positive until February first 2020 he passed away on two six twenty or
should I say he passed away on actually on to seven because it was I believe
Friday morning already in China at the time that he passed away so why was it
that he came down with symptoms and yet for a good week two weeks no positive
coronavirus on testing I don’t know if there was a quality issue or whether or
not he just didn’t have very Mia not exactly sure why this was the case I
want to talk about what’s going on in Canada because we’ve had a couple more
cases in Vancouver first case in Vancouver was related to a gentleman in
his 40s who recently had traveled to the area in China who Han and then there was
a woman in her 50s in Vancouver this was the second case in her 50s who became
ill on February 1st 2020 after a husband and wife from one had
visited her and so there was a female and a male in their 30s that were
visiting and they’re all staying in the same house so when this lady became ill
and she was with someone that had come from Wuhan they tested her and she was
positive for the corona virus it looks as though they have now tested these
people as well after the home isolation and of course they are
both positive as well which is not surprising given the fact that the woman
in her 50s probably got it from those in their 30s what’s interesting is that
these people who are in their 30s generally young speaking here had very
mild symptoms maybe only a slight cold and then it went away what’s significant
though about this case is this represents the first person-to-person
transmission in Canada so far however it appears as though everybody is doing
well at least the cases in North America no one’s been hospitalized because they
needed to be it was more for a quarantine and isolation as it seems
that young and healthy people are better apt to deal with this virus those of us
who are a little rundown let’s take this opportunity to get extra sleep and to
prepare ourselves in case there is a epidemic care of coronavirus but more
importantly because there already is a flu virus issue thanks for joining us you

Well, I am not a conspiracy theory guy but, what are the chances that China is intentionally starting decreasing the reported numbers to give the impression that the situation is coming under control and give the impression that it will be safe for people to start coming back to China and not to be afraid anymore at least this will help to prolong the time available for it in hope that someone finds a vaccine!

  • Reply Helen Townsend February 7, 2020 at 8:01 pm

I read that people who have died in China only have ‘Coronavirus’ on their death certificate if they had an official diagnosis of Coronavirus and died while in a hospital. Considering that the testing kit numbers are known to be insufficient, that the hospitals have been turning lots of people away from the beginning even if they had symptoms, and that anyone who is very ill has no way to get to hospital safely (given no transport and the very long queues), that’s a lot of probably infected people who will be untreated, possibly dying and not being recorded in the official Coronavirus death numbers.

Why are we focusing so much on the official numbers when it is almost certain that the numbers coming out of China are false? And don’t forget that we have no idea how many of those being diagnosed with seasonal flu have actually got the Coronavirus … Is anyone testing the dead?

  • Reply Up-a-Creek February 7, 2020 at 8:13 pm

I personally don't believe all the numbers are in… they have been updating, sometimes 2 – 3 times a day and it appears they have not updated since at least 3am EST U.S…. website says they updated as of 2pm EST and the numbers have not changed since 3am… that's basically 12 hours with the same numbers… I think China and maybe some outlying Countries are holding back to give a better outlook to avoid wide spread panic… remember, they are allowing people to leave areas that have just a few infected, who may have come in contact with the virus and have not started to show symptoms yet and still could be contagious…

The Corona virus Spike membrains PH acidity must be nutralized in order to stop people from going into convulsions: Coronaviruses (CoVs) are important human pathogens with significant zoonotic potential. Progress has been made toward identifying potential vaccine candidates for highly pathogenic human CoVs, including use of attenuated viruses that lack the CoV envelope (E) protein or express E mutants. However, no approved vaccines or anti-viral therapeutics exist. CoVs assemble by budding into the lumen of the early Golgi prior to exocytosis. The small CoV E protein plays roles in assembly, virion release, and pathogenesis. CoV E has a single hydrophobic domain (HD), is targeted to Golgi membranes, and has cation channel activity in vitro. The E protein from the avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) has dramatic effects on the secretory system, which requires residues in the HD. Mutation of the HD of IBV E during infection results in impaired growth kinetics, impaired release of infectious virions, accumulation of IBV S protein on the plasma membrane when compared IBV WT infected cells, and aberrant cleavage of IBV S on the surface of virions. We previously reported the formation of two distinct oligomeric pools of IBV E in transfected and infected cells. Disruption of the secretory pathway by IBV E correlates with a form that is likely monomeric, suggesting that the effects on the secretory pathway are independent of E ion channel activity. Here, we present evidence suggesting that the monomeric form of IBV E correlates with a rise in the pH of the Golgi lumen. We demonstrate that infection with IBV induces neutralization of Golgi luminal pH, promoting a model in which IBV E alters the secretory pathway through interaction with host cells factors, protecting IBV spike protein (S) from premature cleavage and leading to the efficient release of infectious virus from the cells.

Re growth of cases – from multiple sources out of Wuhan there is evidence that only limited number of test kits are being made available – 2,000 per day – suggest you consider that in your reassuring figures – no test kits no confirmed cases so a linear increase. Real situation rather different! When fit healthy 34 year old ophthalmologists who are given every possible treatment including ECMO are dying I would think it is time to stop believing the 2% mortality.

That anecdotal report aligns with some of the higher numbers that are reportedly 10-times greater than the official stats.

Anyway, I would love to see such a detailed report on the flu, or rather different strains of the flu and possibly other diseases. To see things in a perspective. I know it is hard to compare different diseases, and I do not want to downplay the dangers of the 2019-nCoV, but I think that people really do not know how serious issue the "standard" influenza is. I just think it is like people worry about planes, and ignoring how many people die in car crashes every day. Not to mention bikes.

  • Reply Ken Lakin February 7, 2020 at 8:36 pm

The R nought value of the flu is 1.28. This virus is 2.5 to 4 or higher. One person infects 4. 4 infects 16. Get it. If its 4 then 1 person can infect up to 115 million or roughly 15 to 20 weeks. Put that into perspective. A medical institution IN China days its 4.08. God Bless.

  • Reply Miss Liberty Bella February 7, 2020 at 8:42 pm

Lack of test kits, medical staff available and room for patients is likely going to skew data drastically. Even if it was trustworthy.

The same for deaths as they only identify deaths by those already diagnosed. Assuming they do that and not classify cause of death under a patients pre existing condition or otherwise.

Unfortunately I don’t think we will ever know the true numbers from China. Even if whistle blowers from every hospital came out & every funeral home. There is no way to know how many couldn’t access testing and treatment. It seems we have to go based on cases outside of China. However unless it blows up outside of China (which i pray it doesn’t) we cant know the true impact of this virus. As of now people outside are getting treatment and we are on alert. Very different from China’s situation.

I hope it doesn’t get out of control outside of China and that will allow more aid to be given to the people there in need of it. Assuming of course CCP ever allows outsiders in to help..which seems unlikely. But I hope they do as the people of f China don’t deserve to suffer because of CCP political games of saving face. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking.

With the gross economic implications of this data and the CCP's reputation for manipulation (which seems to have become much worse over the past year) I've almost lost faith in accurate data from them.
The flip side being that there may not be the administrative capability to provide accurate data. Not enough testing or medical care to confirm infection or cause of death.

China has quarantined 150 million people. They are burning bodies 24/7, to the point that crematorium facilities are starting to break down. There are fields recognized from space as mass cremation zones. People are being locked into their homes with iron bars, concrete and welded gates. There are drones patrolling 24/7 in various areas to enforce the quarantine….and on and on…

This is not SARS. The fatality rate is clearly much higher than SARS, or the CCP would not be doing these things.

Is anyone shocked at the CDC for not ordering quarantine of the cruise ship in NJ despite Chinese passengers exhibiting symptoms? They were evacuated from the ship without wearing any mask and handled by medics with no masks. Then passengers were let off the ship and the ship continued on. The government is clearly not interested in prevention, only making $$$ in treatment!!!

1:30 Sorry to be a pedant, but it's just "slash" not "backslash". As a matter of fact, it's almost always just "slash", the same slash you use when writing in your normal/usual/everyday text. The only time you may need to use backslash is as a programmer or if you're dealing with the windows file system.

Okay, if we can agree that the numbers are like likely unreliable then how can the video be accurate? We’re basing this whole belief off of data we all believe to be manufactured . The methods of action and science is spot on but we just don’t know for certain any significant metrics. There are likely many, many more deaths in a place so densely populated.

Why do you continue to report China’s propaganda?

What if hospital capacity increased and there is no rationing of test kits, and all nations get equiped with test kits. Would that affect the slope?

  • Reply ResidentStranger February 7, 2020 at 9:27 pm

Do we actually believe these stats coming from China enough to "analyze" it? More likely it's being crafted to communicate what the ChiComs want everyone to think…trying to keep it as believable as possible…which increasingly looks more and more unlikely

2:10 I'm not expert , obviously , but that could also be the result of a general overload of China's health system. Reporting efficiency is failing more than before.

I don't think things are leveling out, I think China's medical system is maxed out in the number of tests it can perform. As they lose doctors, nurses, and techs, they can only test so any people each day.

I hate all the conspiracy theories flying around this thing, but I do think it's awfully suspicious that a relatively healthy man died from a disease that has a 2% mortality rate. Especially considering that the man that died was a man that painted the Chinese government (who is well known to 'silence' troublesom citizens) in a bad light.

The thing that many people might overlook is that you need not only to test suspected cases, but also the ones you want to discharge, to make sure they're not contagious anymore. So on top of the 3,000+ confirmed cases (for which they would have to test a lot more than that) you have to test all the people who are seemingly over the effects of the infection, but might still be able to infect others. If a given case is still contagious you'd have to test them several times until they're not.

This virus could be man made. With trade war an south China Sea going on why isn't China accusing USA of this.? Would rather see this than atomic bombs going off. Hope that this does lead to atomic bombs. Think all Trump stuff just a dictraction. The real story not getting out. They still don't say where it came from. Hope not a USA lab.

Li Wenliang contracted the disease on January 8th.
Admitted to intensive care on January 12th.
A definitive diagnosis of the infection was made on February 1st.
    Dead on Feb 7th.

Does that mean we should, at the latest, use the number of deaths from Feb 7th against the number of confirmed cases from Feb 1st to get the actual death rate?

  • Reply Christopher D February 7, 2020 at 9:34 pm

    We can't trust these numbers

What does the Chinese Academy of Science’s Wuhan BSL-4 lab and the suspected wet market source have in common? They’re only about 10 miles apart in a straight line and are very close to the same 2nd Ring Road.
