Complementary Medicine for IBD: Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs

March 10, 2020

Vitamins and minerals are found in the foods that we eat. They’re required for growth, nutrition and to help the body function properly. Research suggests these natural supplements may provide additional benefits to IBD patients. For example omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are being studied to see if they have anti-inflammatory effects. Research looking at adding the herb turmeric in the form of curcumin tablets to mesalamine therapy has produced encouraging results in mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis and vitamin D supplementation may promote a healthy immune system; however, further studies are needed to determine the potential benefit of all of these and other supplements. If you are able to eat a well-balanced diet, supplementation may not be necessary. Your health care provider, or a registered dietitian, can do further testing to ensure you are getting the nutrients your body needs. Speak with your health care provider before trying vitamins and supplements. To learn more visit www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org
