Can Betaine HCL Treat Candida Yeast Infections?

August 12, 2019

Greetings. Naturopath Eric Bakker from New
Zealand. Author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of products. I’ve got
a question here from Claudevia Sameen from Kiev, Ukraine. Claudivia is asking me, “Can
Betaine HCL treat Candida?” So betaine hydrochloride. Betaine is really a supplement; trimethylglycine
is a supplement that we use for improving stomach acidity. It’s commonly thought that
many people who get reflux disease and heartburn have over acid production and, in fact, many
have under acid production. It’s a very common assumption that heartburn is caused by over
acidity and it’s spawned a whole huge industry, particularly in North America in the United
States. It’s almost a $10 billion US dollar industry with one drug called Nexium alone
netting over $6 billion last year. Stomach acid is very important. It’s a very
important part of good health for people. A very important part. And when we start blocking
stomach acid with medications, we create a huge amount of problem with people. I’ve done
another video on Nexium that you can watch, and that explains a little bit more about
the different kinds of medications, the acid blockers, we’ve got different kinds, two different
types we use, and their effect on human health. A study has found that over 70 percent of
people who take these acid-blocking medications have got, in fact, a yeast infection. By increasing
stomach acidity rather than decreasing it, we’re going to have a good effect on improving
not just the stomach function in general, but we’re also going to prevent the body from
gaining the ability to get these infections. So you’re more prone to getting a yeast infection
or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, what we call SIBO, if you’ve got a higher
pH of the stomach, so a more alkaline stomach rather than a more acid-forming stomach.
A good way to take betaine hydrochloride, Dr. Jonathan Wright in the States, very famous
doctor years ago recommended people start with 300 to 500 mg of betaine HCL as a supplement.
Take it with a meal one capsule and then with each succeeding meal, increase by one dose
until you reach your what we call “tummy tolerance.” If you start feeling a bit of reflux or heartburn
behind the sternum here, you back off and you work under that threshold. I’ve had some
patients honestly take 20 or 30 of these capsules a day until they reach their stomach’s acidity
level. And then over a period of a week or two, they had to back off and use lower and
lower dosages. This is called the “tummy tolerance” method and it works quite well for a lot of
people. If you’ve quite serious heartburn, you could try a little bit of betaine, a little
bit of lemon juice or cider vinegar may help, too, or a bit of betaine. If you’ve got Candida,
make sure that you take a digestive enzyme that contains a bit of betaine.
Check out my products called Canxida Restore. That’s got digestive enzymes in it, along
with some probiotics. Probiotics, in fact, improve the upper level of the stomach’s health,
and antibiotics are linked, in fact, with people taking these acid blocking medications.
Because what we found is that when many people take an antibiotic, they, in fact, destroy
the beneficial flora in the stomach. And yes, there are beneficial bacteria there, too,
and right throughout the digestive tract. This, in turn, can create reflux disease and
problems requiring a drug like Zantac or Tagamet or Prevacid or Nexium, one of those drugs.
So if you require one of these drugs, have you taken an antibiotic in the past? Maybe
you just need to take a good probiotic enzyme formula to build that health back up again.
That’s a bit of a long-winded reply there for Claudivia in Kiev, Ukraine. I hope that
answers your question Claudivia. Don’t forget to do my online quiz at
to determine what kind of level of severity of Candida you’ve got. Thanks for tuning in.

Dr Bakker, first, thank you so much for your videos on candida and h pylori! So informative, please keep them coming.
I tend to eat quite a bit of protein at every meal, I have taken betaine for quite some time now, and have done the build up test and I am up to a large amount of caps per meal. My question to you is, do you believe the betaine can help kill off h pylori as well?

Dr Bakker, I would love to know what you think concerning high quality pea protein shakes ( specifically mrm veggie elite ) and if they are okay to include on the candida diet? It is sweetened by stevia and monk fruit according to the ingredient list which is not lengthy-I eat lots of steamed vegetables wild fish organic chicken and coconut oil daily, no grains no dairy no sugar or processed foods/only fruit is occasional papaya and handful of blueberries but I will cut out all fruit on my cleanse for a period-Thanks very much!

I know to heal the stomach isn't a over night thing but if you find that you have a low stomach acid problem is it normal to take months taking betaine hcl with pepsin after the stomach start to get back to the normal state?

Hi Doctor. Thanks so much for this. Can you get itchy die off or detox rashes with betaine hcl? I seemed to get this when I first started betaine, and it flared with each bump up in dose. I now don’t get rash at all. The rash was across my stomach. I was also getting chills. Initial first two days I also had a headache. None now.

So is it really appropriate to be taking aloe vera as well, given its alkalinizing properties? Why is aloe vera recommended if it is raising the ph?

I took Nexium because of a stomach ulcer, is it safe to take Betaine HCL now?

  • Reply David G September 14, 2018 at 3:54 pm

Hi Dr., I have been suffering from GI issues/fatigue for the last 1.5 years. My symptoms arise after I eat. Cutting out bread and dairy helped my energy alot. These symptoms appeared after I took a couple rounds of antibiotics. I wanted to know if hcl betaine/ digestive enzymes may help improve my symptoms. I have been diagnosed with bacterial overgrowth and am currently on nystatin to help this in my stomach. Antioxidants always seem to relieve my sinus pressure/dark circles and fatigue if they flare up.

Hi Eric I took your Canxida in the past and could feel it was helping. My question is: have you ever heard of Betaine HCI making fungal issues worse? Even when I start on a very low dose with meat (one pill) my fungal issues are exacerbated. This is very noticeable and always when taking HCI (tried different brands). I don't get the 'burn' no matter how many I take. I wonder if I'm just very sensitive to this supplement – I'm an overmethylator so TMG is apparently not a supplement I should take. I also get tired, foggy-headed etc. I know I'm low on stomach acid though – I'm an ex-vegan. Thanks.

    Hello Dr. Bakker,

I think I watched almost all your videos on YouTube and you’re on the top of my list of experts that I listen to compared to other YouTube channels.

Long story short I stopped drinking, did a ton of cleanses for over 10 years, just got over blasto according to my most recent GI test, and I’m continuing my journey to good health.

Currently I’m on this protocol and I’m up to 30+ capsules per day. My current amount is 16 per meal I start today.

My question I have is do I need to take this with meat? According to my recent GI test my holistic doctor told me I have to cut out meat for a little while. Especially red meat. I do eat fish rarely.

My understanding is you have to take more HCL with meat, and less without it meat. I’m on 16 per meal without eating meat. I just want to make sure my understanding is correct. I’m just hoping I don’t get up to 20+ per meal and it’s doing nothing because I’m not eating meat. I eat avocados, nuts, and beans to get my protein while doing this. I just want to make sure I’m not doing this wrong by not eating meat.

I just did a very thorough cleanse to get rid of blasto and CanXida Remove/Restore were used heavily to do this so I’m thinking I don’t have an infection like H Pylori.

Just a comment with a little guidance would be helpful! I also emailed your website many times to try and become a patient but been told many times you’re full. So I’m trying here 🙂

Keep up the good work, you’re making a positive impact!
