Avocado Oil: The # 1 Cooking Oil

Hey, guys. Dr. Axe here, doctor of natural medicine and
founder of draxe.com. In this video, I’m going to be doing an advanced
training on avocado oil, all of its benefits, and how you need to be using it on a daily
basis, and for what doses. And also go over some really surprising statistics
about avocado oil and how it’s used. And this oil is incredible for arthritis,
for brain health, and for a whole lot more. So let’s dive right in and talk about avocados. Now, avocados are actually in the family as
a drupe, similar to coconuts. And a lot of times people think of them as
a vegetable, but they’re really unique in that they’re very high in fats. In fact this is one of the few edible oils
that’s not derived from a nut or seed, and it’s actually pressed from the pulp surrounding
the pit. So the press it . . . cold press it is how
you get avocado oil. Now, a few things to know from a dietary standpoint,
one tablespoon of avocado oil contains about 124 calories and about 14 grams of fat. Now the type of fat that makes up avocado
oil is a blend of monounsaturated fat. So, about 9.9 grams are monounsaturated fats,
1.9 grams polyunsaturated fats, which actually have more of the anti-inflammatory benefits
there in regards to coconut oil or avocado oil. And here’s what I wanted to say about avocado
oil, something you’ve got to know and take a note on. This is the number one oil hands down for
cooking. In fact avocado oil is better than coconut
oil and olive oil both for cooking because of its heat threshold and smoke point which
I’ll talk about in just a minute. So here’s an incredible statistic. Check this out. Avocado oil has even received prescription
drug status in France because of its proven ability to counter the negative effects of
arthritis. So talk about food as medicine as Hippocrates
was quoted 2,000 some years ago, avocado oil is really the epitome of food as medicine
and a big reason for that is is the nutrient profile. Avocados are high in healthy fats, in magnesium,
in potassium, in vitamin A, and vitamin E, and certain B vitamins like riboflavin. We know that it’s incredible for so many reasons
and especially in regards to why it’s a prescribed drug in France. Now, again you can buy in the regular market,
but again it’s that therapeutic in nature that the government deemed it so number one
arthritis relief. Listen, here’s the truth. Most people today are consuming partially
hydrogenated oils like canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, and cottonseed oil, or hey, if
you’re eating out at a fast-food restaurant, these oils are partially hydrogenated. When you hydrogenate oil, it’s been oxidized,
it’s going to cause free radicals and inflammation in your body. Inflammation leads to arthritis. So whether you have neck pain, low back pain,
shoulder pain, knee pain, or general arthritic pain, start using coconut oil or start using
avocado oil as your go-to oil. Now number two here, it lowers blood pressure. Again, part of the reason for this, we talked
about earlier, reduces inflammation. Do you want to know what the actual cause
of high cholesterol is? It’s not genetics. It’s not bad luck. High cholesterol’s caused because you get
inflammation your arteries, then your liver produces cholesterol to go and patch up and
repair the area. So what happens today, a lot of people go
into their doctor, they get put on a prescription medication for cholesterol lowering drug which
just treats the cholesterol but it doesn’t treat the root cause of why your body’s laying
down cholesterol, which is inflammation. So whether it be high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, avocado oil, a great natural choice in place of other oils that can reduce
inflammation and support the health of your heart and your entire cardiovascular system. Number three, avocado oil is the go-to oil
for psoriasis. It’s one of the most deeply penetrating, hydrating,
and moisturizing oils you could use. And let me tell you a little natural remedy
for psoriasis. When if you have psoriasis, what you want
to do is make a blend of avocado oil and add in ten drops of myrrh essential oil and geranium
oil, lavender oil is also effective, and rub that topically on the area. Now, also for psoriasis, getting more sunshine
and taking a vitamin D supplement is also effective. Which leads to my number four point, boost
nutrient absorption. Did you know that if you’re taking a vitamin
D supplement by itself or other fat soluble vitamins even an omega-3 supplement like fish
oil, you actually absorb and digest those fat soluble nutrients better if they are taken
and eaten with a meal that contains fat? So again, if you’re taking a vitamin D supplement,
doing a little bit of a healthy oil, whether it be a flax oil or something like an avocado
oil is great to support nutrient absorption in the body. Now, here’s how to use avocado oil. One way is just uncooked salads or homemade
mayo. In fact I’ll tell you, for lunch today, I
made myself honey mustard chicken salad. Took a little bit of mustard, a little bit
of local honey, and a little bit of avocado oil, and made a natural chicken salad. So it’s great on salads and homemade mayo. Here’s the biggest point you got to remember
with avocado oil. Very high smoke point, a 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ve even seen higher up to that even closer
to 450. So, again, if you’re going to fry something,
let’s say frying eggs in a skillet or frying chicken or doing anything that’s at a hotter
temperature doing any type of sautéing, avocado oil is the best oil. Most other oils have a heat threshold that’s
down closer to 300. So avocado oil, because of its higher oxidation
point and smoke point, it’s one of the best cooking oils you could ever use, if not the
best cooking oil for that very reason. Again, avocado oil is great to moisturize
dry skin, as we talked about even with the psoriasis DIY recipe, it’s a great natural
makeup remover. And here’s a few other things to know. When buying avocado oil, you typically want
to use it within six months, but maximum of one year of purchase time. Opt for organic, extra virgin, unrefined,
cold-pressed. Those are the things you want to see on the
label if you’re buying a high quality avocado oil, and store in a cool place, dry place
away, from light and heat. Ideally, the refrigerator is a great place
to keep your avocado oil. So look at these amazing benefits. Arthritis relief, lowers blood pressure, improves
psoriasis, boosts nutrient absorption, and number one, it’s the number one cooking oil
out there. It beats out coconut oil. It beats out olive oil when it comes to cooking

    Avocado oil are hydrated (processed) which there are no nutritions because it is processed in order to make oil, just like other different vegetables oils. So just eat avocado as it is on daily basis. More nutrition than oil

    I use avocado oil on my skin from face to feet. It is amazing. I eat a raw vegan diet and eat one avocado a day. I feel amazing and a sense of euphoria daily.

    It's funny that I just saw this oil in the store 4 days ago. I was actually looking for chia seed oil and wound up buying hemp oil. Guess I'll go back and get the avocado oil. Thanks for the info Dr Axe.

    I also LOVE and endorse Avocado oil!  Grapeseed oil has also been a favorite one of mine that you haven't mentioned.  It has a smoke point of 446 degrees and also doesn't interfere with taste when cooking. At least for my self and family!  Sometimes when I use Coconut or Avocado oil, certain people sense a different taste and ask me what it is!  Have you ever had people say they can taste these oils and if you have any ideas for these (what I call) ultra-sensitive taste bud people, what they can do to make it taste-less to any degree? Thanks!

    I don't understand how it's anti inflamitory when it's omega 6/3 ratios are among the worst of all the oils. Way worse then canola oil even. Can anyone explain this?

    I think on going stress causes all of this inflammation, throwing off all of the hormones in your body. Too much estrogen for every one put into foods.

    I like it. Taste better than using coconut oil for many dishes as well. Dang near impossible to find unrefined organic cold pressed however.

    Dr. Axe NEED HELP.
    i have got elevated Triglycerides and low HDL, my liver area pains. So i saw on ur website that Olive Oil would be Helpful. But i see that Olive oil is not for cooking. I at home use, Rice Bran oil, Peanut Oil, Sun Flower Oil for cooking. Now can u suggest one OIL for Cooking with the benefits of Olive Oil and High Smoke Point, Is Avocado the Ideal Oil in My Case ?? . Thank You.

    today I was in Wal Mart to buy an avocado oil, there were multi choices, but all of them were organic cold pressed, but REFINED. I didn't buy it yet, but need to understand is refined bad as a choice to buy???

    I took this on and decided putting avocado oil in my smoothie, about less than one table spoon a day. The end result was an increase of triglycerides and VLDL. Could you please explain why this may have happened?

    I seem to be allergic to fresh avocados.  I get very  nauseous:-(  Could avocado oil be a better way to get the nutrients?  I practice intermittent fasting and predominately keto for 20 hours.  I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune CNS disease and with the exception of Avocados, all other fat sources are fine.  Your insight and guidance is much appreciated!

    Ever since my mom started cooking with Canola oil she has Artritis and I have inflammation inside my nose stupid doctor who recommended it to my dad he had a heart attack back in 2013 so she stupid doctor told him to only buy canola oil I hate canola oil I didn't knew that canola oil was bad

    Too much polyunsaturated fat for cooking. Heating them creates oxidation products. Just use tallow, lard, butter or ghee (clarified butter) for heated applications.

    Avocado oil has become my secret weapon in my keto lifestyle. I put it in practically everything. It's versatile and incredibly satiating. My version of Italian dressing for example is avocado oil, garlic powder, basil, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and crushed red pepper. Shake it up and pour liberally over romain. It's delicious and really satisfies.

    Good info. Did you know you come across like a sports commentator or As Seen on T.v. infomercial salesman? As someone who's interested in neither, it's a little off-putting. You might want to work on your presentation. Just saying, you don't need to yell at us to try and sell us something. We're already interested in the information you want to share.

    it is dense LDL--ask your doctor to give you the lipo-protein test—i had a massive heart attack from too much calcium causing calcified penial—calcified aorta—calcified arteries—-I now take K2-7—-we need cholesterol we do not need Bad Dense LDL—

    I never comment or ask for advice. But Dr Axe, is there any healthy oil to use in a deep frier or should we be using air frier’s? Example : fried pickles and chicken nuggets. In almond flower.
