Aggressive German Shepherd Ear Cleaning

August 17, 2019

So, we are going to do the video now. Sit! There we go! This video is about cleaning the ears of a dog that doesn’t like cleaning the ears… … and a dog that will bite you, if you try. This dog is not aggressive, he is just afraid … … of having his ears cleaned. When you already say it, then we get nervous … … for example we use ear cleaning solution … … and we show this to the dog. Dexter, here, we are going to clean your ears! Come here, let’s clean your ears! We see, this is not gonna work … … and what we do now is, we are going to be easy on him … can you come up? sit here closer …, yes. come here SIT, SIT! you have to relax, yes, that’s a good boy. good boy, relax! we are going to try this with patience, right!? And we can do two things: We can use this here… We can use those little cleaning things, those … (I apologize, but i cannot say the word Q-Tips at this point – the dog knows that word!) and then we can use paper towels (Again i cannot say the word Kleenex.) we can have him sniff it first. Here: SNIFF! Look at this. SNIFF! Nothing special, right? We put this in the ear without doing anything. Just like this… Maybe we can clean it. Looook, that was sooo good! Clean it here in this ear …. Very good. Our next step would be … NO! SIT! Come on SIT, don’t escape! Good boy! Then we use the cleaning solution and put that on the paper towel. And then we try. Now we don’t tell him to SNIFF first, because he will smell the solution. and we see he can smell it, and he is not cooperating with us. We try not to react to this (not easy)… NO, no we don’t go bad, no! We go in there with the fingers only (he obviously likes that). That feels good, right? Does that feel good? Look sniff! oooh, that was in your ear! There was smelly stuff in your ear! Then we wipe on the outside only. And then we make our way into the ear. Look at this! Look, that helps, yes! I am in there basically with the cleaning solution. If there is more dirt, we can try a Q-tip. Let’s try this. Let’s sniff first and then we see if we can do this… We are not allowed. OK, we start again with our finger only. Oooh, the finger we like … the we add the Q-tip to it, and we have to be very very careful to not damage the inside of the ear … and we have patience, and we play with the Q-tip in there … look at that! What helps, is when the dog has big ears … Oooh, good boy! Good boy. And we didn’t put any of the cleaning solution on there yet. That would be the next step. Here we add some and sure the dog can smell this, and when you get to close you get in trouble again… we know, we don’t mind, when we go in there with the finger… because it feels good, when we rub … he is just afraid to get stuff in there look at you, what a good boy! Loook! That is a good boy! Step by step we go through with this… and eventually we get the ear cleaned. The more often we try this way, the more often we do it … the more he will trust us, that we don’t hurt him …. this is one thing we have to avoid: No pain in this situation, don’t hurt the dog by accident. we need to do this, when the dog ear is healthy! You cannot go in there with a cleaning solution, if the ear is scratched for example. and eventually it gets a lot easier when you do it same is going to be done with the teeth …. just touch as often as possible you need your teeth brushed, how would you like that? how do you like to get your teeth brushed?

I have a mastiff mix who doesn't like his ears cleaned but he just tries to hide from me, lol. He'll groan at me and that's pretty much it.

Lol I really thought that dog was going to bite that man. I couldn't be a veterinarian… Lol especially dealing with the large size dogs. Lovely dog though.

It's not the Dog! I am the proud friend of 2 GSD's. If you have not properly introduced your dog to a bath, teeth brushing, ear cleaning whatever! U haven't done UR job! U need to make it fun for them! Just bullying & making them & shoving a q tip down their ear is only going to produce negative results! Ur BFF needs to TRUST & RESPECT you! Any questions contact me at [email protected]
    Again "It's not the Dog"

Very helpful video. Do you have one for teeth brushing? My GSD doesn't seem to want to stay still or keep her mouth open for it and she keeps licking inside her mouth after she tastes the toothpaste.

Yes – dogs need their ears cleaned. ESPECIALLY if they have ears that hang down…..Anyway, this guy is SO awesome with the dog. I LOVE people who have patience and give a shit about the animal. I used to Groom, and I would hate how most of the Groomers would man handle the dogs. It takes more time, but have a little compassion!

Don't give a dog affection when it's nervous or irritated, you reinforce the behavior. Affection should only be given when the dog is calm.

If im not in the mood or sad she barks at me to take her for a trip to the park, lake, visit family and sometimes to the pet store. I can't even use the restroom or take a bath without her being inside.

First time ive seen this i have a 2 year old GSD that i worked with him nearly the same way with ear cleaning . my boy looks very similar hes very vocal and mouthy. When hes had enough he will take what ever it is im using away from me.. And the shepherd in this video is anything but aggressive and i dont think he was so much scared as he simply didnt want smelly stuff in his ears and he told you he didnt want it with what most people would consider aggressive behavior but in reality is intelligent behavoir. Dogs only have a couple ways to comunicate growling barking and body language . that shepherd trusts you and obeys he just was expressing his displeasure. I commend you on helping to educate people. Great video and hes a good lookin boy. . and also ive used similar tactics with brushing and baths…

Shepherds are so smart. My girl knows if I'm going to clean any part of her body by certain mannerisms and things that I say. So I cannot do or say any of them and I now have to trick her into any of them so she won't run and hide under the bed LOL if I use the word "clean" she's often running. If she sees me going to the cabinet where I keep dog stuff for grooming and cleaning she's off under the bed. At that point I can't even trick her by asking her if she wants a treat. She will stay under the bed and forgo treats because she knows better. She has goopy eyes right now from the weather changing and I had to pretend we were going to the backyard to play so I grab toys after I snuck and got the cleaning stuff outside. Once we're about to do the cleaning and I have her so she can't run from me she tolerates it just fine. It's just getting her not to run away from me and hide under the bed. Because if she's under the bed there isn't much I can do to get her out.

    A few things (vet tech)

Never let your dog lick your fingers after you stick them in his ears unless you are 100% positive he doesn’t have mites or infections. Noticed he shakes his head a lot.
You don’t want to use Q-tips in the ear because if he moves at all you can severely damage his ears. Paper towel is also too rough for a dogs thin ear. Use gauze- q-tips only for the ear flap. With the cleaning solution you can practice by putting the bottle near his face and treat him every single time- over time you will be able to put it directly beside his ear and work up putting liquid in.

  • Reply franzi juli October 17, 2017 at 6:52 pm

poor dog….. How many times do you clean his hole body? every week to get all the clicks or what ? No hate but I don`'t know what I should think about all the videos I've seen…

  • Reply Paul A October 20, 2017 at 4:16 pm

Again! The same thing again here, Trust, trust, trust. Why the fuck is there no trust here? Why do you even have this dog? Why did you not do your research before getting a dog? Why have you not trained this dog? Why have you not worked on trust? You mention common sense in your video description yet you have none whats so ever. None!

Beautiful dog. My German Shepherd often had irritation in his ears. I just about managed to get drops in, but what he loved most was me putting my finger inside his ear, he loved it so much his back leg would start jumping. They were obviously really irritated, but he was a good boy and seemed to understand the drops were to help him. It's just fear aggression really. God I miss him.

I got my dog to lay down since it was harder for him to move and evade the cleaning. I also used the phrase "Time for medicine." which "Time for…" meant that we were doing the next thing until it is finished. So it's time for medicine until the medicine is finished. Time for bath? Bath time until bath is finished.
He got pretty tolerant of putting up with medicine or bath or whatever he didn't like merely because it was time for it.

It also helps to have fake 'medicine' or fake 'bath' times where you just get them to do the set up, then say they are good and quit.
Time for medicine could just be to lay down, you touch their ear with an unmedicated cloth or whatever, tell them it's over right away, give 'em a cookie.
Or time for bath where they just need to jump into the bathtub, "Good boy, all done!", they can leave it immediately.
Much excitement, much attention, much love, and obedience for when you really need to do something.

    PLEASE HELP ME

My dog doesn’t let us go near him when we are holding the ear cleaning bottle, because he knows that when that gets out then he’s getting his ears cleaned, and he hates to get his ears cleaned. I think it is because he has had negative reinforcements with ear cleaning as my mom just ambushed him when she did it first instead of letting him explore it and become comfortable with it. I also think that it may hurt him, do ear cleaners hurt when applying them to your dog. He is a springer spaniel so he has long floppy ears that get very dirty. He doesn’t even let people touch his ears often, he lets people rub the outside of his ears but doesn’t like it if we touch the inside or lift up his ears. He also bites when we are trying to clean them, but he is not an aggressive dog he is just very scared.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get him to allow me to clean his ears then it would be greatly appreciated as I cannot go on like this, thank you x
