A Yeast Infection Where?!

August 12, 2019

(applause) Up to 75% of women will get a vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lives, but did you know there’s another surprising place you can get a yeast infection? Your mouth. So a lot of folks have heard of this, but oral thrush is actually a yeast infection, and it’s caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth, sometimes even the esophagus, same organism that causes a vaginal yeast infection, but you’ll develop these white lesions on the roof of your mouth, sometimes they’ll have a cottage cheese type appearance, it can cause difficulty swallowing, you’ll sometimes see it in patients who use steroid inhalers for their asthma. Somebody who’s been on antibiotics, can disrupt the normal bacteria. What about pregnant women? I had this when I was pregnant with my first child, and it was horrible. It was painful, and even if I ate a piece of bread, it felt like someone was scraping my tongue. Yeah, the mouth is very sensitive, and a yeast infection can be pretty uncomfortable. It is important if you do notice this to see a healthcare provider, because you also have to make sure there isn’t a specific cause for it.
