As women, our vagina is always busy. If it’s not producing menstrual blood, then it’s producing vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge is something that’s been asked a lot. What is vaginal discharge? What is normal, and what is abnormal? Men should also be aware of this, too, because you will be in at least one type of relationship, WIth women in your lifetime. What is vaginal discharge? Vaginal discharge is a way for your vagina to clean itself. It’s fluids made by glands in the vagina and the cervix carries away bacteria and dead cells. It helps protect the vagina from infections. Usually, it’s clear white or milky white, depending on the menstrual cycle, ovulation, Breastfeeding, and sexually aroused. But sometimes your discharge is not that color. When is vaginal discharge abnormal? There are many types of vaginal discharge. Clear white vaginal discharge that is little at the beginning or end of a menstrual cycle is normal. Clear and watery discharge can happen any time during a menstrual cycle, And it increases after exercising. Clear and stretchy discharge means that you’re ovulating. That is normal, too. Red or brown discharge or bloody discharge happens during or after a menstrual cycle. Sometimes you can also have spotting. This can be caused by irregular period, or if you’ve had unprotected sex, It can be a sign of pregnancy. But in rare cases, brown or bloody discharge is a sign of endometrial or cervical cancer. This is why it’s important that you get a pap smear every 3 years if you’re between 21 to 65 years old. Yellow or green discharge, especially if it’s thick, is a sign of trichomoniasis. Other symptoms include itchiness or pain during urination. Cloudy or yellow discharge is a sign of gonorrhea. Other signs include spotting and pelvic pain. Thick, white and cottage-cheese like discharge is a sign of yeast infection. Other signs include swelling or pain around the vulva, itchiness and pain during sex. Yeast infection is very common. At least 90% of women have had a yeast infection, At least once in their lifetime. But don’t worry because it’s very easy to treat. Gray or yellow-ish discharge, accompanied by a fishy smell, is a sign of bacterial vaginosis. Other signs include itchiness, burning, redness, and swelling of the vulva. Finally, pink discharge after childbirth is the uterus lining shedding. Now we know that there are many types of discharge, caused by many reasons.
